CHAPTER 1
It was late in the afternoon, the sky painted a beautiful mix of colors. Kylie sat quietly in the backseat of her father’s beat up truck with her younger brother asleep beside her, snoring softly as they drove past a sign reading, “Welcome to Duskfall Harbor.” Kylie, originally from LA, had moved to Oregon during the beginning of fall, recently after her mother’s death. Her father was also in too much debt with some people so he had decided to move away. Probably forever, he never said if they were gonna move there temporarily or not.
Kylie had her headphones on, her walkman blasting loud rock music in her ears as she looked out her window, watching all the cars drive by. She didn’t know how to feel about it. It was the same town her friend, Antoinetta was also moving to for an unknown reason. What a coincidence.
“WHOOOOSH,” went the wind as Kylie lowered her window to get a better view of the town up ahead of them. It was well hidden from the public, founded in the 1700s, not much is known about it, only that Fall never really ends there. Kylie has tried researching about it before the trip, but nothing really came up when she tried searching it up on her school Library’s old computers.
“I guess it isn’t that bad,” thought Kylie as the car got closer and closer to the town. It had rows and rows of identical neighborhoods with a big running train nearby in the mountains, and a big church on the tippy top of a hill. Unusual but aesthetically pleasing. I guess you could say the town was pretty big. Old gas stations nearby, stores, markets, a big school that looked more like an orphanage, trees with orange and brown leaves, black cats on porches, pumpkins, diners, newspapers on sidewalks, etc. It was slightly foggy, now turning night with the street lights casting an eerie orange light on the streets.
“SCREECH,” went the car as they finally pulled up in the driveway of a somewhat big house.
“Alright, we’re here. Get your brother and unpack,” Kylie’s father mumbled, looking tired and completely out of it.
She simply nodded and watched as he got out, unloading their stuff from the back of the truck before going inside with his suitcase, not bothering to look back at them. Kylie then sighed and took off her headphones, shaking her little brother, Jason, awake.
“We’re here, get up, idiot,” Kylie would say to her younger brother, continuing to shake him before he finally woke up.
“Huh? We’re here already?”
“Yeah. Go get your stuff and get inside, it’s late. Hurry,” Kylie said as she exited the truck and helped Jason carry their things into their house. The interior of the house was decent at least. There was the kitchen connected to the living room, then the dining room close by with a hallway leading to the bedrooms and a back door (plus an attic). Kylie looked around for her father and sighed softly, just assuming he had already picked out his room and fallen asleep.
“This is heavy!” Jason complained, struggling to carry his luggage as he followed Kylie into the house and shut the door closed behind him.
“Deal with it. I call dibs on the biggest room.” Kylie said, ignoring Jason’s complaints as she walked over to one of the rooms, stepping inside and inspecting the spacious place. It was a medium-sized room but still slightly bigger than the rest. The walls were painted a light, blush pink. There was only one window nearby and a small walk-in closet. In the corner there was a small bed and a small shelf beside it with a lamp on top.
“Sigh, This is my life now…” Kylie walked over to the bed and placed her luggage onto it, starting to unpack her stuff.
After a few long moments of unpacking and organizing her stuff Kylie finally got ready for bed and fell asleep. Hoping the new school she transferred into would be better than the last.
