Chapter 1

The air buzzed with life in the golden embrace of a sun-drenched meadow. The grass, a lush carpet of emerald, swayed in rhythmic response to the playful breeze; each blade cradled dewdrops like precious gems, winking at the sun as it ascended higher in the pale blue sky. The warm breeze carried secrets, whispering forgotten promises and days of happiness as it ruffled the hair of a joyful family who sat beneath an ancient oak, their laughter mingling with the distant song of a lark, a melody that seemed to rise from the very heart of the earth. Butterflies fluttered from blossom to blossom, their delicate wings carrying secrets whispered by wildflowers. And then a russet squirrel darted across the grass, its bushy tail a flash of crimson. It vanished into the gnarled embrace of a hazel tree, leaving behind a trail of curiosity.

Stella, a wide-eyed little girl, pointed excitedly. ‘Layla! Look, a squirrel!’ Her voice held a mix of wonder and awe.

Layla, the older sister, grabbed Stella’s little hand. ‘It went up that tree. Let’s follow it!’ she cried.

Their laughter trailed behind them as they raced across the emerald expanse, the grass bending under their eager feet.

Meanwhile, beneath another sprawling tree, Alexandria, a charming eight-year-old lost in innocent daydreams, sat amidst a scatter of daisies. She plucked each petal with care, her fingers stained yellow and green. The world around her blurred as imagination wove its threads.

Suddenly, Stella and Layla tumbled upon her, a joyful collision of laughter and giggles. Alexandria squealed in surprise, then joined in with her little sisters’ laughter. ‘You two are so mischievous!’ she teased, tossing a handful of grass and daisies at them.

The petals clung to Stella’s curly hair, transforming her into a floral explosion of giggles. Layla’s laughter bubbled forth. ‘Check your hair out, Stella!’ she exclaimed, pointing playfully.

'Alex,’ Stella whispered, her eyes sparkling. ‘Try and catch us!’

And so, the two cheerful sisters dashed away, their laughter echoing through the meadow. Alexandria called after them. ‘I’ll count to ten!’

Sera, their mother, sat at the edge of the emerald expanse, her eyes tracing the path of her daughters as they disappeared into its heart. The meadow stretched like a forgotten secret, its lush greenery concealing ancient mysteries. The air hummed with happiness, and Sera’s heart swelled with love and care for her girls.

But sadness, like a shadow, has a way of seeping into the happiest of hearts. Worry throbbed in her body, a silent ache that tightened her chest. These moments of sibling camaraderie were precious, yet she knew they were ephemeral, like dewdrops evaporating under the morning sun.

Jacob, her husband, sat by her side; his smile held a mix of pride and love. ‘They’re so happy,’ he murmured, his gaze following the girls, whose laughter danced among the wildflowers.

Sera’s sea-blue eyes clouded. ‘Yes,’ she replied, her voice brittle. She tilted her face towards the sky, where a flock of birds glided, their wings catching the golden light. ‘But happiness is fleetin’. Our peaceful years are numbered.’

Jacob frowned, puzzled. ‘What do you mean?’ he asked.

Sera’s voice trembled, ‘I have only one purpose now: to protect Alex from the demon’s desires.’

The weight of her words hung heavy in the air, casting shadows over the sun-drenched meadow. Sera’s resolve was unwavering, but fear weighed on her heart like a stone. The tranquil days would fade, replaced by a darker chapter, one she hoped to shield her daughter from at all costs.

Jacob’s smile faded, replaced by a solemn expression. ‘Don’t worry,’ he whispered, his voice gentle. ‘Everything will be perfectly fine. She’ll be safe. The demon’s curse won’t breach our protection.’

Sera’s gaze remained fixed on the happy girls. Stella’s ash-brown hair caught the light, Layla’s laughter echoed like wind chimes, and Alexandria chased them, her innocence a fragile shield against the encroaching shadows.

'She’s a curious lass,’ Sera whispered, her voice heavy with concern. ‘Soon, she’ll be lookin’ for answers I’m not ready to give. She’s already askin’ about her dad, and when I dodge the question, I see the sadness in her eyes.’

Alexandria twirled, her laughter joyful. Layla held her hands, and they spun together. ‘She’s so unaware,’ Sera continued, ‘unaware of the danger that’s lurkin’.’

Jacob tried to reassure her. ‘She’ll understand when she’s older,’ he said. The breeze blew softly through his blond hair, and he smiled at Sera, but she looked away, her face reflecting sorrow.

But the demon’s shadow looms,’ she interjected, her voice breaking. ‘She’s bloodthirsty and has already made Alex’s father insane.’

Jacob’s bright green eyes locked onto Sera’s, questioning and intense. ‘Why doesn’t Alex’s father care for his flesh and blood?’ His voice was a mix of anger and sorrow.

Sera’s voice wavered, her gaze distant as she recounted the past. ‘When Alex was born,’ she began, her voice soft. ‘I remember him liftin’ her delicate body, cradlin’ her in his arms. His lips brushed her forehead, and he smiled, promisin’ love and protection.’ She clenched her fingers, knuckles white. ‘In that moment, I felt like the happiest woman alive. But then…’ Sera’s voice dropped to a whisper, ‘he took Merona away from me. The joy shattered, replaced by a gnawin’ fear. I knew he’d do the same with Alex.’ Her eyes welled with grief. ‘Alex, my sweet child, innocent and full of wonder. He seeks to harm her, to taint her soul. But I won’t allow it. Even if I die protecting her.’

Her gaze shifted to the lush grass beneath her feet, determination carved into every line of her face. A cloud shadowed the meadow, and rain droplets fell like tears from the sky. Yet, a rainbow arched across the horizon, showering the emerald grass with hope. In this fleeting moment of sunlight and sorrow, Sera vowed to fight for Alexandria’s safety, undeterred by the encroaching darkness.
