Chapter 1: The Mystery

Introduction: This story follows a series of mysterious deaths near the fictional Indonesian forest of Hutan Shamrat.

Chapter 1: The Mystery

The bodies of two men were found deep inside the dense jungles of Hutan Shamrat. With these deaths, the toll for the last two months climbed to eight. A week earlier, a young man had been discovered lifeless. Before that, two middle-aged hunters vanished and were later found dead. Three more bodies—still unidentified—turned up in two separate incidents.

What unsettled everyone was the same grim pattern: no injury marks on the corpses. Not even a scratch, except on the young man whose body had clearly been mauled by a wild animal, but after he was already dead. Forensic experts concluded that the true cause of death was far stranger—the victims’ blood had been drained.

Investigations began, yet the mystery only deepened. The police suspected a group of tribals who opposed outsiders hunting and destroying the forest. But there was no evidence, not a shred. Meanwhile, fear tightened its grip on nearby towns. Whispers of ghosts drifted from tea stalls to street corners. The tribals denied any wrongdoing, though some admitted—almost proudly—that the killings might at least scare away hunters and thieves.

The pressure on the investigating team kept rising. Families of the dead demanded answers. The officers had none.

Arman Fahri, a forest officer newly posted to Hutan Shamrat, found himself drawn to the strange case. Only a week into his job, he accompanied the police to the latest crime scene. The two bodies lay pale and untouched, as if death had simply claimed them without struggle.

No wounds.

No animal bites.

No weapon marks.

No footprints around them.

Nothing.

“What do you make of this, Officer Fahri?” asked Mallek, the senior officer leading the investigation. He and Arman had stepped a few paces away as other officers combed the area.

“Never seen anything like this, sir,” Arman replied.

The light faded quickly as the jungle swallowed the evening. Mallek signalled for the search to wrap up.

He looked back at Arman, lowering his voice. “Tell me something—do you believe in ghosts and spirits?”

Arman shrugged lightly. “Haven’t seen any with my own eyes, sir.”

“These incidents… they’re not a good sign,” Mallek said, heading toward his jeep. “Whoever—or whatever—it is, we have to find out.”

“Yes, sir. If a murder has taken place, there has be someone behind it. Someone cunning. Dangerous. And we need to stop it before more people die,” Arman said firmly.

Mallek paused before stepping inside the vehicle. “Keep your eyes open, Officer Arman. Inform us the moment you notice anything suspicious.”

He left in his jeep, followed by the others.

Arman returned to his forest office with one of his constables, Rangga Aditya.

At thirty, Arman Fahri had finally achieved his dream of becoming a forest officer. He loved the wilderness—the silence, the danger, the sense of belonging. Though this was his first posting, he carried himself with confidence and maturity.

The department had allotted him a modest bungalow on the outskirts of the forest. His staff included a guard, Farid Khan; two constables, Rangga Aditya and Dewa Santoso; and a domestic help, Allabux. He also had an office, a jeep, and even a horse for deeper forest patrols.

But tonight, none of that comforted him.

The forest felt… watchful.

Thanks for reading. Chapter 2 will follow soon.
