Chapter 1:The Broken Mainspring
Time in the Capitol was no longer measured in hours; it was measured in fear.
Eighteen-year-old Elena Ticker stepped out of the small apartment perched above her father’s clock shop. The air there always smelled of machine oil and metallic gears, a stark contrast to the scent of roses and blood that now choked the city. The streets were swarming with desperate people, their eyes glued to the sky. Suddenly, a cry erupted from the crowd: "Supplies! It’s the supplies!"
Small, silver parachutes began to drift down with the grace of a silent assassin.
Elena’s mother gripped her hand with a crushing force. Her father, a man who had spent his life tuning the rhythm of time, froze. A terrifying silence settled in his eyes for a single second. Then, the gates of hell swung wide.
The first explosion.
The roar turned the screams into a hollow vacuum of silence. Elena was thrown to the ground. When she struggled to rise through the dust, she saw her mother—lying perfectly still, like a watch whose battery had finally run dry. But her father, though bleeding and broken, didn't spare a thought for his own wounds. He heard it—a strange, rhythmic clicking that only an expert’s ear could catch. Tick… tick...
"Elena!" he roared with a strength his frail frame shouldn't have possessed.
He threw himself over her, shielding her entire body with his own—a final, human suit of armor. Then came the second explosion. All Elena felt was the crushing weight of her father’s body, protecting her soul from the jagged shards of the world.
She woke up in a makeshift hospital. The air was a nauseating blend of antiseptic and death. Her body felt like a map of agony.
"Father… Mother…" she rasped, her voice splintered.
The nurse, whose face looked as though it hadn't known sleep since the rebellion began, wouldn't meet her eyes. She spoke with a numbness that barely masked her exhaustion. "We don't have names here, girl. The people out there... they were turned to ash. Just numbers on the missing person lists."
The nurse scribbled the name "Elena Ticker" on a clipboard and moved on. In that moment, Elena felt her own internal clock stop forever.
Weeks later...
The Capitol had transformed into a cage of rubble. Elena had taken a job cleaning the new military headquarters—a position she had begged for just to be near the "centers of power" and to scrape together enough coins for a ticket out of this suffocating city. She spent her nights scavenging through the ruins, collecting broken watches or any trinket left behind by the fleeing Capitol elite to sell on the black market to greedy soldiers and antique dealers.
In one of the cold military corridors, as Elena scrubbed the floor with a pale face and hollow eyes, a heavy shadow loomed over her.
It was Gale Hawthorne.
Gale watched her Intensely. He noticed the tremor in her hands and the sickly yellow tint of her skin. Gale didn’t need a medical degree to know what he was looking at. He had seen that face hundreds of times in District 12; he had seen it on his siblings whenever he returned from the woods empty-handed. It was the face of true hunger.
Without a word, he reached into his tactical vest and handed her a protein bar.
"Take it," he said, his voice gruff but carrying a ghost of humanity. "Eat this before you collapse on the floor."
Elena forced a faint, "friendly" smile—the kind the people of the Capitol had mastered for survival. "Thank you, Commander."
Gale walked away, his boots echoing with military precision. Elena shoved the bar into her pocket with sudden violence. She stared at his retreating back and whispered to herself: "Is this the price? A protein bar in exchange for the family your traps murdered?"
Two days later...
Elena slipped Into a military office under the cover of night. She wasn't looking for food this time. She was rifling through scattered official documents, searching for any permit or travel pass that could facilitate her escape.
The room was pitch black, the silence oppressive. Suddenly, a flashlight beam cut through the dark, blinding her.
"You again?"
Gale was standing there, his hand resting on his holster, his suspicious eyes scanning the room. He clearly hadn't expected to find the "friendly cleaning girl" lurking In the shadows this late.
"What are you doing here?"
Elena froze. In that heartbeat, she felt every gear of her plan grind to a halt before the soldier who held the keys to her salvation… or her destruction.
