Chapter 1

For many others, the patter of the rain represents a lot of various things; for me, it’s the wonderful time I spent with my dad. Whether it be a crappy painting or the world’s disgusting brownies, he was always proud of me.

I never understood why he loved playing in the rain every chance he got. But now I do, crazy how it takes to be an adult to understand your parents.

“Come on Pearl, now stop being such a prick, enjoy the rain while it lasts.”

I never loved the rain when I was little. The dirt, the insects, the germs were all too much for me. Now that I look at the rain it’s become the most beautiful thing I could ever imagine.

“Dad, stop what if you get sick. Think of all the germs and dirt”

“Darling if you don’t enjoy nature, you’ll regret it later and I won’t tell you I told you so”

He’d always say this and drag me right into the garden surrounded by beautiful plants we both planted together. Once I was in the rain I could hear the bird chirping and the faint sunlight touching our faces as we danced to our music.

Fly me to the moon was an old but classic song, if I could remember it was his and mom’s song and soon it became ours.

I loved our little home surrounded by beautiful greenery and the prettiest flowers that reminded me of our wonderful memories spent together.

Although I never got to see my mom, I knew that she was an amazing, beautiful and the kindest person my dad told me about. The only thing I knew about her was that she was a nature enthusiast and an amazing artist who never failed to capture emotions in her paintings. She and I shared an interest in nature, and of course our green eyes, which distinguished us from the others. Every time I glanced at her photos, her eyes would twinkle with hope, eagerness and curiosity. Which I had lost since my dad left me.

The ring of the cafe’s bell startled me and I stopped staring at the rainy atmosphere in front of me while thinking about the good times I had with my dad. Which were the best while it lasted.

A tall muscular guy throws his bag off his shoulder on the unarranged cafe’s chair.

So what’s up Grandma,” he says, leaning against the window I had been gazing at the rain from.

I roll my eyes at his comment, “Stop calling me that, David”.

It’s hard not to when you’re wearing that ugly sweater with a cup of coffee like a grandma,”he mocked me with a chuckle.

Fuck you.

We both chuckle at our ridiculous little banter while I take a sip from my coffee.

After leaving my past behind, I decided to begin a new, happy chapter in my book. So I traveled to New York to create a cafe full of nature, emotions, and happiness; hence, I opened Nature’s Brew.Nature’s Brew immediately became a haven for individuals seeking solace and connection amidst the city’s rush and bustle. Every area was decorated with bright plants, and the air was filled with the delicious aroma of freshly brewed coffee, inviting everyone to pause and enjoy the moment.

David and Theo were my first customers, and I soon found myself spending most of my time with the chatterboxes who were the loudest in my cafe. After two years of avoiding the outside world, I had finally found a reason to be happy. And all thanks to them.

“So, how did your interview go?” I ask David, hoping for a good response due to his discerning nature.

“Shit” he grunted looking away avoiding my eye contact.

“Shit? What the fuck did you do now” i cried out, crossing my arms.

David had almost gone on five interviews for the past two weeks and the outcome is always as I quote ‘shit’.

After finally forcing him to begin applying for jobs because he can’t live on his mother’s money forever, he agreed to do interviews, but afterwards he complained about it like a whiny little baby and this situation is completely the same.

“The interviewer sucked alright, completely not my fault, she got pissed off for no reason and said ‘you should really show yourself out mister’ in a grumpy tone.

“Now what exactly happened?” I questioned him, taking a deep breath to prepare for a big whiny monologue.

Already irritated, he settled down on the chair and rolled his eyes. “When she questioned me about why I had thought about applying for the job, I said, ‘Obviously, cuz I need money,’ but she didn’t become upset. She asked me to tell her about myself, and I told her straight out, ‘Didn’t you read the resume I sent in?’ I could tell she was becoming angry, but she wasn’t extremely angry. She requested me to hand her the latte across the table later, and I spilled it on her accidentally. She truly needed to take off that vest, therefore I did desire to do it, but I didn’t do it on purpose.

Then, like a fucking volcano, she erupted and yelled, “GET THE FUCK OUT,” gesturing toward the door. “You need to calm down, Martha,” I replied, trying to reason with her. “It’s okay if things in your family aren’t going well or if you don’t like your unflattering bob and that vest really needs to be in the dumpster.” You know, Martha remained silent for a bit before telling me to actually go. I left since her face was bright red at the moment.

Like I said a big ass whiny monologue. I stare at him with really no comments left, after all this is the fifth time and I’ve already given him enough advice but to be fair why not try last time?

“David, why don’t you try saying something other than the complete truth when they ask you questions?’’ I sigh and tell him the last piece of advice I could truly fondle upon.

“You’re telling me to be dishonest, Pearl? Do you really want to steal my true identity?” he cried dramatically putting his right hand above his heart like i hurt his feelings.

This fucking bitch “Im just telling you to not be your true self alright? I love you but you really have to be more professional when you’re giving an interview “I say it in one breath, tired of his drama.

Taking in a big gasp he wailed “I never expected this from you pearl” and turned around to avoid me.

I take a deep sigh and stare out the window once again, the rain still going on but with the slightest touch of sunlight peeking through the clouds.

I look at David who has been sitting with his back in front of me for a while.

“Hey idiot, c’mon get up” I tell him standing.

“Why should i?” he replies bluntly.

“Let’s play in the rain.” I suggested standing in front of him.

“Are you fucking crazy? No” he squealed, denying the suggestion.

I dragged him out of the cafe to the backyard anyway and got under the rain, spreading my arms with my eyes closed and spinned around.

“You’ll get all wet Pearl come inside” he complained with his arms wrapped around him.

“Come on David, now stop being such a prick, enjoy the rain while it lasts.” I say dragging him in the rain.

He was stiff just like me when I was young but soon he loosened up and the smile I saw on his face was worth a million. The sunlight through the clouds touched our faces as we danced to the rhythm of rain. Soon Theo comes to the backyard with his gloomy face towards us.

“What the hell are you guys doing?” he questioned with a judgy look on his face.

“What do you think, Theo? obviously playing in the rain” David said with a sarcastic tone.

“You guys are freaking weirdos.”he groans.

“Whatever, come join us.” I say , giving him no time to have a thought and dragging him in making him join us.

Looking at us enjoying the rain made me feel alive after a long time. I soon played the song fly me to the moon. For a moment like this it’s well deserved.

The notification on david’s phone broke us away from the moment that we were completely immersed in.

“Shoot gotta go guys, i have to get ready for my cute date with a guy i met while waiting for the interview” david tells in a hurried tone.

“I thought you ‘really’ hit it off with Julianna last week.” I grunted.

“You wont understand the bisexual heart darling. Alright see ya, love you guys” he says and rushes out of the cafe.

I look at Theo now who stared at David as he walked away with a gloomy expression on his face.

“Now what happened to you?” I ask him, taking a risk.

“Only the worst thing in my company” he groans.

Although I hate the complaints, I still love these guys the most, plus it’s raining. How could you ever be mad when it’s monsoon? After the wonderful memories I can’t imagine someone despising rain.

I take a deep breath and head inside the cafe brewing two new cups of coffee to listen to the big monologue once again.
