Chapter 1 Arrival in Nocturna

The carriage rattled over the cobblestones, and Aveline “Ava” Hartwell pressed her forehead to the cool glass of the window, trying to make sense of the city spreading before her eyes. Nocturna was nothing like the quiet towns she had known—its towers pierced the night sky, cloaked in mist and dim lamplight that flickered like ghostly lanterns. Shadows clung to every corner, twisting along the narrow streets as if the city itself were alive, watching her every move.

Her mother, Clara, adjusted the heavy baskets beside her and glanced at Ava with a gentle smile. “We’ll make a good life here, love. The bakery will do well, I promise.”

Ava nodded, though her stomach churned with unease. There was beauty in the city, certainly—arches carved from black stone, fountains glimmering under the silver moon—but there was a tension that whispered of unseen eyes and secrets best left untouched.

When the carriage stopped in front of a modest, ivy-clad building, Clara hopped down first, her hands already reaching for the door latch. “Our new home,” she said cheerfully, lifting one of the baskets. “Small, but sturdy. And the bakery space is just through there.”

Ava followed, her eyes darting to the street. A figure stepped from a shadowed alley across the way, tall and elegant, moving with an almost predatory grace. For a brief moment, their eyes met. The man—he looked impossibly handsome, with dark hair and pale skin that seemed to shimmer in the lamplight—gave no smile, only a fleeting nod before vanishing as silently as he had appeared.

Ava blinked and shook her head. “Mom… did you see that?”

Clara hummed, unpacking baskets of flour and sugar. “See what, dear? The city is full of shadows, but don’t let your imagination run wild.”

But Ava’s mind would not let it go. That shadowed figure, watching from across the street, seemed almost… aware of her, as if the night itself had drawn him to her presence.

By the time the bakery doors opened and the first customers trickled in—mostly humans, with the occasional stranger whose eyes seemed too sharp, too calculating—Ava kept glancing toward the street. She did not know that the figure she had seen was already taking an interest in her, that in the very shadows of Nocturna, someone had marked her presence long before she even knew the danger—or the fascination—he would bring into her life.

The city was alive, and it was watching her.

And so, Aveline Hartwell stepped into her new life, unaware that the night held secrets she would not escape, and that the most alluring shadow of all had already begun to follow her.
