Chapter 3

couldn’t take it anymore.

Everything felt like it was crashing down on me.

The accusations… the looks of disappointment… the silence whenever I tried to explain myself.

And then my father did something he had never done before.

He raised his hand.

The sting on my cheek faded quickly, but the pain inside my chest didn’t.

“I didn’t do it,” I whispered, my voice shaking. “I didn’t touch Mom’s iPhone 17.”

But no one listened.

Leslie stood there with her arms crossed like she had already solved the case.

Princess shook her head sadly, as if she was disappointed in me.

My mother barely looked up from her phone.

And my father looked at me like I was a stranger who had just ruined his perfect family.

Something inside me broke.

So I ran.

I didn’t know where else to go except the one place that felt safe.

Jack.

My hands trembled as I stood outside his house. I almost turned back three times before I finally knocked.

When the door opened and I saw his green eyes, the words rushed out before I could stop them.

“Can I stay here… just for tonight?”

I expected hesitation.

Maybe even rejection.

But Jack didn’t even pause.

“Of course,” he said gently.

His house felt different from mine the moment I stepped inside.

It felt warm.

Alive.

Jack’s parents welcomed me like I was someone they had known forever.

His mom pulled me into a hug the moment she saw my face.

And somehow… she understood everything without me saying a word.

“Oh sweetheart,” she murmured softly.

That was all it took.

The tears came rushing out of me like a storm I had been holding back for years.

I cried so hard I could barely breathe.

For the first time, I realized how badly I had wanted someone to hold me like that.

Someone who cared.

Someone who saw me.

I didn’t even want to remember that I had a family somewhere else.

Because this place… felt more like home than my own house ever had.

Days passed.

Then weeks.

And slowly, something inside me started to heal.

Jack and I spent almost every moment together. Talking, laughing, studying.

Sometimes we would sit quietly on the couch, and somehow even the silence felt comfortable.

But one evening, something small changed everything.

Jack’s father was in the kitchen when I walked in.

Grandma’s memories suddenly flooded my mind.

Without thinking too much, I grabbed the milk, the espresso, and a mug.

I began making a latte.

Just like Grandma taught me.

The milk steamed softly.

The foam swirled as I carefully poured it.

A delicate leaf formed on the surface.

When I placed the cup in front of Jack’s dad, he stared at it in surprise.

Then he looked at me.

“Did you make this?” he asked.

I nodded nervously.

He took a sip.

His eyes widened.

“This is incredible.”

Jack laughed beside me. “See? I told you she’s talented.”

For a moment, something warm spread through my chest.

Not pity.

Not sympathy.

Pride.

And for the first time in a long time…

I felt like maybe I wasn’t invisible anymore.
