I lived in a small neighborhood in Mumbai, where the streets were always crowded and the air was filled with the sounds of honking cars, shouting vendors, and people rushing to survive another day. Our house was tiny—just two small rooms with old furniture that had been repaired so many times it barely looked the same anymore. But it was home. Every morning, my father would wake up before sunrise. I could always hear the familiar jingle of his taxi keys as he prepared to leave for work. “Anaya,” he would say gently as he stood by the door. “Study hard today.” My father drove a yellow taxi through the busy streets of Mumbai for hours every day. Sometimes he came home exhausted, his shirt soaked with sweat from the heat and traffic. But he never complained. Not once. My mother was just as hardworking. Every morning, the smell of spices filled our small kitchen as she prepared food to sell to workers and students nearby. She made the best samosas and vegetable curry in our neighborhood. People often lined up outside our house to buy her food. “You’ll see,” my mother would say proudly whenever she looked at me. “One day our daughter will live a life better than ours.” They believed in me more than anyone else in the world. And I believed in them. I studied harder than anyone in my class. While other students went out with friends or relaxed after school, I spent my evenings buried in books. Because I had a dream.
