The Palace Where Freedom Didn’t Exist
For three years, Swetcha Devaraya had lived inside a palace she was never allowed to leave. The mansion was larger than most luxury hotels, filled with servants, cameras, and security that watched every corner. She had wardrobes filled with designer clothes, meals planned by a dietician, and a life surrounded by comfort that many women could only dream about. Yet every morning when she woke up, Swetcha felt the same quiet truth settle in her chest — she was not living in a home. She was living inside a beautifully decorated cage.
Her husband, Vedansh Devaraya, had built that cage around her.
People across the country knew his name. The ruthless CEO of Devaraya Groups, a man whose decisions controlled billion-rupee markets and whose silence alone could terrify rivals. He was brilliant, cold, and dangerously powerful. But the same man who ruled business empires with an iron grip was the one who watched every step his wife took through dozens of security cameras. A man who rarely spoke to her, rarely showed emotion, yet never allowed her to move even a step beyond his reach.
No one knew which truth was real — the man who gave her every luxury in the world, or the man who refused to let her walk outside the mansion gates.
The Devaraya family was one of the most influential families in India. Their empire stretched across industries, infrastructure, hospitality, technology, and real estate. Wherever the name Devaraya appeared, power followed.
At the head of this empire stood Raghunath Devaraya, the patriarch. In the business world, he was known as a ruthless strategist who could crush competitors without hesitation. But inside his home he was a man who valued family above everything. His presence alone commanded respect.
His wife, Ramani Devaraya, stood beside him as both a partner and a pillar. Graceful and intelligent, she handled the hospitality and infrastructure branches of the company. While Raghunath dominated boardrooms, Ramani ensured the family legacy remained steady.
They had three children. The eldest, Vedansh Devaraya.
The younger son, Prem Devaraya, was the complete opposite of his brother. Where Vedansh was quiet and intimidating, Prem was warm, approachable, and lively. He managed the family’s real estate division and admired his elder brother deeply, often describing himself jokingly as Vedansh’s shadow.
And then there was the youngest, Lalasa Devaraya, the only daughter of the family. She was studying abroad and was expected to return home the following week, something the entire family was eagerly waiting for.
But inside the grand Devaraya world, the quietest and most mysterious presence was the woman who had entered the family three years ago : Swetcha.
She came from the respected Varma family, known for their dignity and values. As the eldest daughter, she had always been the pride of her parents. Calm, educated, and gentle, she carried herself with a grace that naturally earned admiration.
When the proposal from the Devaraya family came, her parents believed it was the best possible match for their daughter. A powerful family. A successful husband. A secure future.
Swetcha had agreed to the marriage because she trusted her parents decision.
The wedding had been nothing short of spectacular. Politicians, celebrities, and industrialists attended the grand ceremony. News channels spoke about the alliance between the Varma and Devaraya families for weeks.
To the outside world, it was the perfect arranged marriage. But reality was something else entirely. Three years had passed since that wedding.
And in those three years, Swetcha had never truly understood the man she had married.

She walked slowly through the quiet corridor of the mansion, her soft silk dress brushing gently against the polished marble floor. The evening sunlight poured through the tall glass windows, casting golden patterns along the walls.
Everything around her looked magnificent. The chandeliers. The paintings. The endless halls. Yet the silence inside those walls often felt suffocating.
As she stepped into the living hall, her eyes automatically moved toward the small black dome fixed on the ceiling. A camera.
Another one stood near the staircase. Another above the corridor. Swetcha didn’t even need to count them anymore.
She knew exactly how many existed inside the mansion. And she knew who had installed them.
At first, she had believed they were installed for security. But slowly she understood the truth. They were there to watch her.
Every movement she made inside the house was known to him. Every place she walked, every room she entered, every time she stepped into the garden — Vedansh knew.
Swetcha walked toward the garden doors and stopped there quietly. Outside, the green lawns stretched endlessly under the evening sky. The breeze carried the scent of flowers from the carefully maintained garden.
Birds flew freely across the sky. Her eyes followed them. A faint smile appeared on her lips — but it disappeared almost immediately. “They’re lucky…” she whispered softly.
Lucky enough to fly wherever they wanted. Unlike her. The heavy mansion gates stood far beyond the gardens. Tall, guarded, and always locked.
In three years of marriage, Swetcha had never stepped beyond them unless its family emergency.
She turned away from the garden and walked slowly toward the dining hall. As usual, the long dining table had already been prepared with several dishes.
The servants bowed slightly as she entered. “Madam, dinner is ready.”
Swetcha nodded gently and took her seat. She knew the routine well.
Even if she hadn’t asked for anything, everything would already be prepared. Her meals followed a strict diet chart prepared by her nutritionist. The chefs cooked accordingly.
She lifted the spoon slowly. Just then, her phone vibrated softly on the table.
The name on the screen made her fingers pause. Vedansh.
For a moment, she simply stared at the screen before answering. “Yes…”
His voice came from the other side of the call, calm and deep. “Did you eat?”
Swetcha glanced at the untouched plate in front of her. “Not yet.”
A brief silence followed. Then his voice came again, firm but quiet. “Eat.”
It was not loud. Not harsh. But it was never a request. She picked up the spoon and began eating slowly.
For a few moments neither of them spoke. Finally he asked, “What did you do today?”
Swetcha looked down at her plate. “Nothing… just stayed inside.”
Another short silence. She wondered if he was looking at one of the cameras right now.
Sometimes it felt like he could see her even when he wasn’t physically there.
“Sleep early,” he said finally.
“…Okay.”
The call ended. Swetcha placed the phone down gently.
People often said that Vedansh Devaraya loved his wife deeply. And maybe they believed that because of the way he treated her when he was home.
Sometimes he would pull her onto his lap while she was reading and feed her food with his own hands.
Sometimes he would wrap his arm around her waist and make her sit beside him quietly for hours.
Sometimes he would make her lie against his chest until she fell asleep.
He never shouted. Never argued. Never forced conversations. But he never allowed her to leave either.
No friends. No outings. No stepping outside the mansion gates.
It was as if he had drawn an invisible boundary around her life. A boundary only he controlled.
Swetcha leaned back in her chair slowly. Three years. Three long years of marriage. She had everything people could ever want. Wealth. Luxury. Comfort.
But there was one thing her heart still searched for.Love.The kind of love she could feel. The kind of love she could understand.
And somehow, despite everything Vedansh did for her… She had never truly felt it.

Miles away, in a high-rise office overlooking the night skyline of another city, Vedansh Devaraya sat alone behind his desk.
Multiple screens glowed in front of him. One of them showed the live cameras from his mansion.
His eyes were fixed on the screen where Swetcha sat quietly at the dining table. Watching her. Just like he did every night.
His fingers tapped slowly against the desk. A faint whisper escaped his lips. “Stay where I can see you, Petal…”
His gaze darkened slightly. “…because the moment you step outside my reach…”
His voice lowered into something dangerously calm. “I might not be able to stop myself.”
And somewhere beneath his controlled, emotionless exterior Something fiercely possessive stirred. Something that refused to let her go.
