Summary

Espoir est une orpheline banale. Enfin... peut-être pas totalement. Après avoir fait foyer par foyer, elle finit par se retrouver sous la tutelle d'un homme mystérieux qui regorge de secrets. Comprendra-t-elle pourquoi le monde veut sa peau ?

Chapitre 1 : le foyer

Foyer Sainte-Marie, 7h12 du matin.

Espoir regardait par la fenêtre, la pluie tapant à travers la porte. La porte grinçait.

— Espoir ? Une voix douce, c'était Madame Hennériette, la directrice. Elle était toujours habillée impeccablement. Avec un chignon serré et des lunettes au bout du nez, elle avait un regard sévère. Mais Espoir avait l'habitude de cette attitude, après tout… c'était déjà son troisième foyer. Derrière elle, un homme, habillé dans un costume noir coûteux, des gants en cuir lisse, un sourire froid,qui n'atteignait presque pas ses yeux… comme figé dans le temps.

— Voici Monsieur Morotti, continua la directrice, avec cette voix mielleuse qu'elle avait l'habitude d'utiliser.

— Il voudrait te rencontrer.

— Pourquoi ? demanda Espoir, un peu perdue. L'homme la fixa, un regard froid, trop froid, mais étrangement, elle le fixa. Ses yeux verts innocents surprirent légèrement Morotti, mais il se ressaisit rapidement. Il dit calmement, sa voix grave :

— Petite, avec moi tu auras une nouvelle vie.

— Tu es la clé…

Quelle clé ? Pourquoi moi ? De quoi ? Espoir n'eut pas le temps de poser la moindre question.

La directrice se tourna vers l'homme.

— Je vous laisse faire connaissance. Elle s'empressa de sortir comme elle le faisait toujours. Elle n'aimait pas jouer la directrice compatissante, et encore moins pour Espoir — elle ne l'appréciait pas.

Le silence était lourd. L'homme s'approcha et s'assit sur le lit d'Espoir. Un silence tendu et froid remplit rapidement la pièce. Il semblait si imposant face à Espoir.

— Quel âge as-tu ? demanda-t-il froidement.

— Je… j'ai 11 ans, répondit doucement Espoir, en serrant son ours en peluche contre elle. Ce n'était pas de la peur, plutôt de la nervosité.

L'homme hocha vaguement la tête.

— Tu es la clé, Espoir. Ne l'oublie jamais.

— Pourquoi ? osa-t-elle demander timidement.

Il regarda sa montre en or, sûrement véritable, à son poignet, puis dit d'un ton sec, avec une pointe de mépris :

— Je reviendrai te chercher dans 15 minutes. Prépare tes affaires, enfin… si tu en as.

Il se leva et marcha silencieusement vers la sortie alors que la porte se referma dans le couloir. Son téléphone sonna, il répondit froidement :

— C'est bon, j'ai la fille. Commence le plan.

Madame Hennériette se couvrit la bouche, appuyée contre le mur. Elle avait tout entendu, choquée. Elle ne s'attendait pas à entendre une telle chose. Sur le coup, elle paniqua, puis partit rapidement. Que devait-elle faire ? Affronter cet homme ? Elle n'en aurait pas le courage, encore moins si cela était pour sauver une enfant du foyer.

— Qui est là ? demanda Morotti, la voix glaciale. Il marcha vers l'endroit d'où provenait le bruit.
