Summary

Two young Deiciders banter how to kill a god, finding the hunt impeccably easy, until the eldest of their kind breaks their pride and shows them how. In a world where a god hearkens only to hearts that desire to raid, plunder, murder, and enslave, a friend dies, awakening a deep instinct within a child. Her death is seen as glorious by the honored fallen as they welcome her into their immortal halls. They hear no glorious battle she lost, but a war she won, a war of pain, fear, and survival. Her mother places a god on trial. A veteran Deicider stands as judge, jury, and executioner.

A small child enters Valhalla. The battle they lost was “hiding from an alcoholic father.” Odin sees the flinch when he slams the cup and refrains from doing it again. He hears the child’s pain; no glorious battle this, but one of fear and wretched survival.
