Summary

Nyx has one job. As a demon sent to the human world, she has been given three targets—three people she must eliminate before returning home. It’s supposed to be simple. Humans are weak, predictable, and easy to fool. At least, that’s what she thought. Everything begins to change when she meets Caleb, a kind and charming boy who treats her with a warmth she has never known before. For the first time, Nyx begins to question the mission she was sent to complete. But not everyone is convinced she’s as harmless as she seems. Asher, quiet and observant, quickly becomes suspicious of Nyx’s strange behavior and the mysterious disappearances happening around them. The more he watches her, the more certain he becomes that she’s hiding something dangerous. Caught between her deadly mission, growing feelings she never expected, and someone who may be uncovering the truth, Nyx must decide who she really is—and what she’s willing to sacrifice. Because in a world where demons walk among humans… Sometimes the most dangerous evil is the one hiding behind a smile.

Prologue

Life always makes you lose something you love. Sometimes, I wonder if, behind all those smiles, there’s a pain we all share… or if some people just have the life I wish I had.

But pain doesn’t always stay quiet. Sometimes it festers, twisting into anger — the kind that seeps into your veins and drowns out reason. And when it takes control, it blinds you… until all you can see is the urge to make someone else feel what you felt.

Now, I think I understand what “let the past be the past” really means. Because once you lose something you adore, it’s erased — along with the joyful smile and the hopeful eyes you once saw in the mirror. They fade, forgotten… and you’ll never see them again.

Or at least… that’s what I thought.
