Summary

Six students are magically fused into a telepathic hive-mind called the Shared Silence after a mountain storm, while hiding in Oakhaven, a psychic clash with a rival named Darion wakes a mountain-sized Stone Dragon. The group flees on the dragon, but it begins draining their life force. Darion's consciousness is accidentally sucked into their link, sabotaging them from within. To survive an attack by Euclad (a Dragon-turned-human), Vinati traps Darion's soul inside the dragon's heart to act as its battery. They teleport their floating bone-city into the void, only to realize their power has alerted the Void-Harrower-a star-eating entity that makes Euclad look like a minor threat.

Chapter 1 The Ascent: Shelter from the Storm

The air was thick and heavy, carrying a metallic scent that promised trouble. Below, the valley was a patchwork quilt of greens and browns, now rapidly disappearing under a sheet of ominous, bruised-purple clouds. For Kylian, Adante, Vinati, Mwogwa, Incizo, and Miàge, the majestic thrill of their extracurricular mountain hike had curdled into a race against the elements.

They were more than halfway up Mount Aethelred when the group, facing the dilemma of descending into the already-formed storm front or pushing upwards towards a potential peak-side shelter, had voted to ascend. Now, legs trembling and lungs burning, they were proving Vinati's initial prediction—that the summit would offer a quicker escape route—correct, but not without cost.

Mwogwa slumped against a moss-covered boulder, her face slick with sweat and grim. "I (pants) don't (pants) think (pants) I can (pants) take it anymore, how far is it again?", Mwogwa asked. Kylian, his face flushed but his eyes bright with a stubborn, focused energy, pointed a little higher, towards a jagged, dark outcrop. "Not that far, good thing we decided to go up the mountain, if not we could've missed this view" Kylian said. Mwogwa squinted at the sweeping, stormy vista. The beauty was undeniable, but the fear was a colder, sharper sensation, "if only the view didn't cost me my feet", she snickers. Adante, ever the caretaker, placed a firm hand on Mwogwa's shoulder, "Alright princess, let's take a rest", he said, "princess? More like a big baby. But she is right, Ky, let's take a break for a while to catch up on our strengths. We’re moving too slowly, and we need to reach that ridge before the rain hits" Vinati said.

Adante's anxiety, however, hadn't waned. He was already scanning the grey sky, his gaze darting from the peak to the darkening clouds. "But we can't stay here in the middle of nowhere, what if it starts snowing, or rain down hails (starts searching for any of both)".Miàge, normally the most jumpy, managed a dry laugh despite her own nerves. "And they say I'm the paranoid one."shakes head. "Seriously though, the wind is picking up. We need to find cover.", she said. Kylian nodded, pulling his waterproof shell tighter. He knew they couldn't waste time resting in the open. The terrain here was a mix of loose rock and sparse, stunted pines—no natural cover to be seen.

"I'll scout the place to search for shelter. Maybe there's a small cave or a deep overhang just past the next bend" Kylian said. Incizo, quiet up to this point, stood up immediately, adjusting the worn, heavy backpack he carried. Incizo was the most observant of the group, rarely spoke, but always acted with purpose. "I'll come with. We don't want you losing your way in the middle of nowhere. If the storm hits while we’re separated, someone needs a rope and a better sense of direction than you do, Kylian." he said. Kylian grinned, a flash of relief and camaraderie overcoming the strain in his face.

"Lead the way then, Incizo." he said. As the pair started traversing the unstable, upward path—Incizo moving with quiet, deliberate steps, and Kylian following with determined urgency—a low, distant rumble echoed through the canyons. It wasn't thunder yet, but the mountain was clearing its throat. The remaining four—Adante, Vinati, Mwogwa, and Miàge—huddled together, watching the scouts disappear, their only hope now resting on finding a small haven before the mountain unleashed its fury. The first, sharp, icy drop of rain hit Vinati's cheek, making her gasp. The storm was here, "what did Kylian and Incizo find as they scout for shelter" she asked out loud.
