Mermaid
All I remember is swimming in blue-green water. I don't know how I came to be. Am I as old as the waters? I'm drawn to anything that sparkles and shines; along with the waters treasures, pearls, coral and lost coins from pirate ships. I am totally adorned with jewelry that the waters so freely give.
Simply existing has made me tired and long for some other reason to exist. The water, although enchanting, can be hauntingly lonesome. The sounds of the creatures have gotten familiar and sometimes sound unfamiliarly spooky.
I've never seen a being remotely like myself, which I must admit was startling at first glimpse. It was merely a glimpse of my own reflection on the rippling tide one ominous day.
The closest thing I've seen to myself is humans. Men that sail the seas on ships are unkind and barbaric. Men have filthy language and hostile ways. I have watched men killing one another in battle from afar behind rocks near the shore; for as long as I can remember. Their corpses rotted on the sea floor and their bodies becoming bait for the sea foragers.
One mysterious night when the moon was full and the sky had a violet-blue hue; I was lying on the rocks gazing at the moon and noticed a boat out of the corner of my eye. The deck had lights strung around it. The lights remind me of the many species of deep sea fish that have special adaptations to living in extremely high pressure. They have light organs called photospheres that create light by chemical process called (bioluminescence). They're fascinating. So, is my innate knowledge of the sea! It's quite a unique power. I want a closer look, but do risk possibly being seen by a human? I've never ventured close to a human being. The night always seems mystical right around the the tail end of dusk. AKA the magic hour. Curiosity has gotten the best of me. Investigating agilely was my decision. My agility will enable me to get a closer look and the night will keep me incognito.
The hull of the boat was larger than I thought. As I emerged from the water, there was a different feeling in the air. Was it the knowledge of being closer to a human being than I thought was possible? This is beyond my wildest dreams. Overcoming my fear was intense and liberating. Carefully, I swam up to the deck and quickly scoped it out. I saw an unusual shaped object pointing towards the sky. Then, I felt the presence and heard footsteps of someone coming towards the deck.
