What the City Doesn't Show You
The birds had stopped singing three years ago.
Nobody in New Arcadia talked about it. Nobody was supposed to notice. The city's ambient sound system filled the silence with engineered birdsong — precise, algorithmic, looping every forty-seven minutes — pumped through speakers embedded in the sculpted trees that lined the Helix Promenade. The trees themselves were real, technically. Modified. Their leaves a shade too green, their bark a shade too smooth, their roots drinking recycled water filtered through seven layers of corporate purification.
Everything in New Arcadia was technically real.
Everything was also a lie.
Beyond the city's gleaming perimeter walls — three hundred feet of reinforced smart-glass and electromagnetic shielding — the world looked different.
It looked like it was dying.
The Outlands stretched for hundreds of miles in every direction: cracked earth the color of old bone, rivers reduced to muddy whispers of themselves, forests standing leafless in the middle of what should have been summer. The sky out there had a particular quality to it, a yellowish haze that sat low on the horizon like a bruise that refused to heal. Scientists — real ones, not the kind Helix Dynamics employed — called it particulate saturation. The accumulation of decades of unchecked industrial output, of plastics burned in open fields, of chemical runoffs that had quietly poisoned aquifer after aquifer until the ground itself became toxic.
The people who lived out there called it simply the grey.
They lived in settlements — loose collections of salvaged materials and stubborn human will — scattered across the Outlands like broken teeth. Three hundred million people, by last unofficial count. Helix Dynamics' official count was lower. Significantly lower. Numbers, like birds, had a way of disappearing when they became inconvenient.
The children out there were the first to show it.
Not the hunger, though that was real enough. Not the respiratory illness, though that was real too. What showed first, what the few remaining independent medical workers documented in hushed, frightened reports passed hand to hand like contraband, was something quieter and more terrifying. Developmental delays. Immune systems that collapsed under infections that should have been minor. Bone density in teenagers that belonged to people three times their age. Reproductive rates plummeting. Miscarriages becoming so common they had lost the weight of grief — they had become simply expected.
Humanity, it turned out, was not built to survive what humanity had done to its own home.
The damage wasn't just environmental. It was biological. It had gotten inside.
Inside the cells. Inside the nucleus. Inside the spiraling ladder of code that made a human being a human being.
Nobody outside of three research facilities in the world knew the full picture yet. Nobody outside of one corporation knew just how far the damage had progressed, how precise the timeline was, how certain the outcome.
Nobody except the people who had decided, quietly and without public announcement, to do something about it.
For themselves.
Dr. Arya Voss first saw the Outlands when she was nine years old.
Her father had taken her to the observation deck on the 200th floor of the Helix Residential Tower — the one reserved for senior researchers and their families — for her birthday. He had wanted to show her the sunrise. New Arcadia's sunrises were famous, the way the light caught the glass towers and scattered into a thousand colors, the way the promenade below glittered like something from a dream.
But Arya had looked past it. Past the gleaming towers and the perfect trees and the choreographed fountains. Past the perimeter wall with its soft blue glow.
She had looked at the grey horizon beyond and asked her father what it was.
He had been quiet for a long time.
That, he had finally said, is why we do the work.
She had believed him. For twenty-three years, she had believed him. She had built her entire life around that belief — around the idea that the work mattered, that the research was real, that Helix Dynamics was, underneath its corporate architecture and its profit margins and its security clearances, genuinely trying to fix what was broken.
She had been, as it turned out, catastrophically wrong.
But she didn't know that yet.
Not on the morning this story begins.
New Arcadia at dawn was its own particular kind of beautiful.
Arya stood at the floor-to-ceiling window of her apartment on the 87th floor of Research Tower B and held a cup of coffee she hadn't tasted yet and watched the city wake up. The sky was shifting from deep indigo to something pale and luminous, and the towers caught the light and held it, and for a few minutes everything looked clean and possible and almost worth the price of what it cost to live here.
Almost.
She was thirty-two years old. She had spent the last seven of those years as a senior geneticist in Helix Dynamics' BioFutures Division — the most prestigious, most secretive, most generously funded research team in the corporation. In the world, arguably. They had resources that state-funded universities dreamed about. Equipment that hadn't been publicly announced yet. Data sets pulled from biological monitoring programs spanning forty countries. They were, her division director Dr. Harlan Vex liked to say, standing on the edge of the most important scientific breakthrough in human history.
He said it at every quarterly review. He said it with the particular smile of a man who knew more than he was telling.
Arya had always found that smile motivating.
She was starting to find it unsettling.
It had begun three weeks ago with a number.
Not a dramatic revelation. Not a crisis. Just a number in a dataset that didn't match the model. A small discrepancy in a genomic degradation study she'd been running on samples from the BioFutures longitudinal cohort — eight thousand anonymous subjects, tracked across fifteen years, representing the full demographic spread of New Arcadia's population.
The degradation rate in the most recent cohort samples was 0.3% higher than the model predicted.
0.3% didn't sound like much. Arya knew better. In genomic degradation modeling, 0.3% over a fifteen-year tracking period didn't represent a minor statistical variance. It represented a fundamental error in the underlying assumptions of the model. It meant something about the rate or the mechanism or the timeline was wrong.
She had flagged it in her weekly report. A footnote, careful and precise, noting the discrepancy and suggesting a secondary analysis to identify the source.
Dr. Vex had responded within four minutes.
Likely instrument error. I'll have calibration run a check. Remove the footnote from the circulated version — don't want to muddy the waters before Q4 review.
Arya had stared at that message for a long time.
Then she had removed the footnote.
Then she had run the secondary analysis herself, quietly, on her personal partition, using a subset of the data she was authorized to access independently.
The number wasn't instrument error.
The number was real.
And when she extrapolated it across the full dataset — across all cohort groups, all age ranges, all the carefully anonymized subjects whose biological data flowed into Helix Dynamics' servers every day from the monitoring chips embedded in every New Arcadia citizen's health-ID — the picture that emerged was not a footnote.
It was a catastrophe.
She finished the coffee without tasting it and set the cup down on the window ledge and pressed her palm to the glass.
The city hummed below her. Delivery drones traced their invisible paths between towers. The morning shift workers were emerging from the residential blocks, their Helix-issued smart-jackets tracking their biometrics, their routes optimized by the city's central management AI, their days already planned in fifteen-minute increments before they'd had breakfast.
Efficient, Helix called it. Optimized for human flourishing.
Arya had written those words herself, in a public-facing research summary three years ago. She'd believed them.
Her reflection looked back at her from the glass — dark eyes, sharp jaw, hair pulled back in the particular severe way that meant she'd been up since four and hadn't bothered with anything beyond functional. She looked, she thought, like a person who was about to do something she couldn't undo.
She wasn't sure yet if that was true.
She picked up her access badge from the kitchen counter. Ran her thumb across the Helix logo embossed on its surface — the double helix rendered in silver, elegant and precise, the corporate symbol that appeared on every building and every document and every piece of equipment in her world.
The helix of life, the company's founding mythology called it. The code that makes us human. The code we are sworn to protect.
She clipped the badge to her jacket.
She had a meeting with Dr. Vex at nine. A routine check-in, his calendar invitation had said. Progress update, BioFutures Q4 deliverables.
She had something to show him. Not the Q4 deliverables.
Something she'd found last night, at two in the morning, when the secondary analysis had led her somewhere she hadn't expected to go — through a permissions gate she shouldn't have been able to access, into a directory she hadn't known existed, toward a file with a classification level she had never seen before.
Not Red. Not Black.
White.
White clearance. She hadn't even known that existed. None of the researchers she knew had white clearance. She wasn't sure she'd be able to open the file. She'd almost closed the directory and pretended she'd never seen it.
Almost.
The file had a name.
PROJECT LAZARUS — SELECTION ARCHIVE — FINAL VERSION — AUTHORIZED RECIPIENTS ONLY.
Her hands had been very still when she'd clicked it. She remembered that clearly — how still her hands had been, as if her body understood before her mind did that whatever was on the other side of that click was going to change everything.
The file had opened.
She had read it.
And then she had sat in her dark apartment for four hours without moving, while the city slept around her and the ambient birdsong looped through its forty-seven minute cycle outside her window, and she had understood, with a cold and absolute clarity, exactly what kind of company she had given her life to.
The meeting with Dr. Vex was in two hours.
She had not yet decided what she was going to do.
What she knew — what she had known, in some wordless place beneath thought, since she was nine years old pressing her face to the glass of an observation deck, staring at a grey horizon — was that someone had to do something.
She had spent twenty-three years believing that someone was Helix Dynamics.
She was beginning to understand that someone was going to have to be her.
She picked up her bag.
She walked to the door.
Outside, New Arcadia gleamed in the morning light, perfect and controlled and beautiful, its engineered birds singing their looping song into air that tasted faintly, if you were paying attention, of chemicals.
Arya Voss stepped into the corridor.
The door closed behind her.

I really enjoyed this first chapter. It is written really well and has great suspense to make you want to read on.
will saving humanity even matter if the rest of the planet is dying? seems to me that what those geneticists should be doing is designing bacteria able to eat all the toxins.
