Chapter 4

The Nanny’s Secret Betrayal

The house was unusually quiet that evening.

Lila sat at the dining table, the dim yellow light above her casting long shadows across the room. Papers from Alex’s investigation were scattered in front of her—documents, emails, and notes that no longer made sense.

Something wasn’t adding up.

For weeks they had been chasing Ethan Blackwood, uncovering pieces of his scheme. But one question remained unanswered.

How had Ethan known so much about her family?

Someone close had been feeding him information.

Lila rubbed her temples, exhausted.

Across the room, Maria Torres moved quietly through the kitchen, washing dishes as she had done thousands of times before. The familiar clinking of plates against porcelain should have felt comforting.

But tonight it didn’t.

Alex stood near the doorway, holding a folder in his hand.

His expression was serious.

“Lila,” he said slowly, “there’s something you need to see.”

Lila looked up.

“What is it?”

Alex hesitated for a moment before placing the folder on the table.

“These records… they show someone from inside this house accessed the research files before they disappeared.”

Lila frowned.

“That’s impossible.”

Alex opened the folder.

“It came from this computer network.”

Lila’s eyes scanned the documents. Her stomach tightened as she read the login records.

The username.

The timestamps.

Her heart started beating faster.

“No…” she whispered.

Her eyes slowly lifted toward the kitchen.

Maria stood frozen beside the sink.

The plate in her hands slipped slightly, clattering against the counter.

Silence filled the room.

Maria’s face had gone pale.

“Maria?” Lila said, her voice trembling. “Tell me this isn’t what it looks like.”

Maria’s hands shook.

For a long moment, she said nothing.

Then her shoulders collapsed.

The truth was already written across her face.

“I… I never meant for it to happen this way,” she whispered.

Lila pushed her chair back abruptly.

“What are you talking about?”

Tears filled Maria’s eyes.

“I was trying to protect him.”

“Protect who?” Alex asked.

Maria looked toward the hallway where Javier’s study door stood closed.

“Your father.”

The words hung heavily in the air.

Lila felt the ground shift beneath her.

“What does my father have to do with this?”

Maria’s voice trembled as she spoke.

“I thought they were going to destroy him. I thought the investigation would ruin everything he built.”

“So you helped them?” Lila said in disbelief.

Maria shook her head quickly.

“No. I didn’t know what Ethan Blackwood was planning. I thought I was only giving small pieces of information… things that could help keep suspicion away from your father.”

Alex’s expression darkened.

“But Ethan used that information.”

Maria nodded slowly, tears rolling down her cheeks.

“Yes.”

Lila stared at the woman who had raised her.

The woman who had comforted her after nightmares, who had cooked her meals, who had been part of her life for as long as she could remember.

“Why?” Lila asked softly.

Maria’s voice broke.

“Because I loved him.”

The confession echoed through the room.

“I loved your father,” she whispered.

Lila froze.

“For years… before you were even born. But he chose another life. Another family.”

Maria wiped her tears.

“I stayed because I thought it was enough just to protect him. To be near the people he loved.”

Lila felt a mix of anger, sadness, and disbelief swirling inside her.

“All this time…” she said quietly. “You were helping the person trying to destroy me.”

Maria shook her head desperately.

“I didn’t know he was framing you, Lila. If I had known, I would have stopped everything.”

The room fell silent again.

Finally, Maria sank slowly to her knees.

“I’m so sorry,” she whispered. “I never wanted to hurt you.”

Lila’s chest tightened.

The betrayal cut deeply—but so did the pain in Maria’s voice.

This was the woman who had cared for her all her life.

A woman whose love had twisted into a terrible mistake.

Alex glanced at Lila carefully, knowing the decision now belonged to her.

Lila took a slow breath.

The truth had finally been revealed.

And nothing would ever be the same again.
