Alex opened the folder.

Her heart started beating faster.

“No…” she whispered.

Her eyes slowly lifted toward the kitchen.

Maria stood frozen beside the sink.

The plate in her hands slipped slightly, clattering against the counter.

Silence filled the room.

“Maria?” Lila said, her voice trembling. “Tell me this isn’t what it looks like.”

Maria’s hands shook.

For a long moment, she said nothing.

Lila pushed her chair back abruptly.

“What are you talking about?”

“Protect who?” Alex asked.

“Your father.”

The words hung heavily in the air.

Lila felt the ground shift beneath her.

“What does my father have to do with this?”

Maria’s voice trembled as she spoke.

“I thought they were going to destroy him. I thought the investigation would ruin everything he built.”

“So you helped them?” Lila said in disbelief.

Maria shook her head quickly.

“No. I didn’t know what Ethan Blackwood was planning. I thought I was only giving small pieces of information… things that could help keep suspicion away from your father.”

Alex’s expression darkened.

“But Ethan used that information.”

Maria nodded slowly, tears rolling down her cheeks.

“Yes.”

Lila stared at the woman who had raised her.

The woman who had comforted her after nightmares, who had cooked her meals, who had been part of her life for as long as she could remember.

“Why?” Lila asked softly.

Maria’s voice broke.

“Because I loved him.”

The confession echoed through the room.

“I loved your father,” she whispered.

Maria wiped her tears.

“I stayed because I thought it was enough just to protect him. To be near the people he loved.”

“All this time…” she said quietly. “You were helping the person trying to destroy me.”

Maria shook her head desperately.

“I didn’t know he was framing you, Lila. If I had known, I would have stopped everything.”

The room fell silent again.

Finally, Maria sank slowly to her knees.

“I’m so sorry,” she whispered. “I never wanted to hurt you.”
