Chapter 6

Alex’s Mother Protecting Lila’s Family

The evening air was cool as Alex walked up the steps to his childhood home.

The porch light glowed softly against the dark sky, casting long shadows across the quiet street. He paused for a moment before knocking.

His mind was racing.

The documents he had found earlier that day refused to leave his thoughts.

Police reports.

Old medical records.

And one name that connected them all.

His mother.

Detective Sarah Carter.

The door opened.

Sarah stood there, her expression calm but curious.

“Alex? I wasn’t expecting you tonight.”

Alex stepped inside slowly.

“We need to talk.”

Sarah closed the door behind him, sensing the seriousness in his voice.

“What’s wrong?”

Alex placed a thin folder on the table in the living room.

“I was reviewing some old case files connected to the investigation around Lila’s family.”

Sarah’s expression barely changed.

“And?”

Alex opened the folder and slid a photograph across the table.

It showed a hospital room from years ago.

His mother lying in a bed.

Beside her stood a young woman in a white coat.

Lila’s mother.

Isabella Moreno.

Sarah’s eyes rested on the photo for a long moment.

Then she sighed softly.

“So you found out.”

Alex felt his chest tighten.

“It’s true, then?”

Sarah sat down slowly.

“Yes.”

Alex crossed his arms.

“Why didn’t you ever tell me?”

Sarah looked up at him, her voice calm but heavy with memory.

“Because it was never supposed to matter.”

Alex frowned.

“It matters now.”

Sarah leaned back in her chair, staring at the photograph.

“Years ago,” she began, “I was involved in a terrible car accident.”

Her voice softened.

“I nearly died that night.”

Alex listened silently.

“I was rushed to the hospital,” she continued. “Most doctors believed the injuries were too severe.”

She paused.

“But Isabella refused to give up.”

Alex looked at the photo again.

“She saved you.”

Sarah nodded.

“She fought for hours in surgery. When I finally woke up days later, she was the first face I saw.”

The room grew quiet.

“She didn’t just save my life,” Sarah said quietly. “She gave me another chance to see you grow up.”

Alex slowly sat down across from her.

“So you felt you owed her.”

Sarah nodded.

“Yes.”

Alex flipped through the rest of the files.

“These reports show that during some investigations involving Javier Moreno… evidence disappeared.”

Sarah didn’t deny it.

“I made sure the cases never went far enough to destroy that family.”

Alex’s voice tightened.

“You interfered with investigations.”

Sarah looked at him directly.

“I protected the people who saved my life.”

Alex leaned back, struggling with the realization.

“You’re a detective. Your job is to follow the law.”

Sarah’s expression remained steady.

“And sometimes the law and gratitude collide.”

The words hung in the air.

Alex rubbed his forehead.

“So when the university scandal started…”

“I kept an eye on it,” Sarah said.

Alex looked up sharply.

“You knew?”

“I suspected something wasn’t right,” she admitted. “But I also trusted that the truth would eventually come out.”

Alex thought about everything they had uncovered about Ethan Blackwood.

The manipulation.

The lies.

The betrayal.

“You could have told me,” he said quietly.

Sarah’s voice softened.

“I didn’t want my past decisions to influence your investigation.”

For a long moment, neither of them spoke.

Finally, Alex exhaled slowly.

“Lila deserves to know the truth.”

Sarah nodded.

“I know.”

Alex stood up.

Despite everything, he could see the sincerity in his mother’s eyes.

She hadn’t acted out of corruption.

She had acted out of gratitude.

Still, the revelation left him with a difficult question.

Where did loyalty end—

And justice begin?

As Alex walked toward the door, Sarah spoke softly behind him.

“Alex.”

He turned.

“I never regretted saving that family,” she said.

Alex paused.

Neither did he.

But now, the truth about the past was another secret that would change everything.
