Chapter 7
Lila’s Secret Half-Brother
The university genetics lab buzzed with quiet activity.
Students moved between workstations, examining data on glowing computer screens. What had started as a simple class project had quickly become one of the most talked-about assignments of the semester.
DNA analysis.
Lila sat at her desk, staring at the results displayed on her laptop.
At first, everything looked normal.
Genetic markers. Chromosome patterns. Population ancestry estimates.
Just data.
But then something caught her attention.
A highlighted notification appeared at the bottom of the screen.
Possible Relative Match Detected.
Lila frowned slightly.
“That’s strange,” she murmured.
The project database compared student DNA samples with public genetic records used for research. Usually, the results only showed distant relatives—third or fourth cousins scattered around the world.
Curious, Lila clicked the notification.
The screen loaded a new file.
Her eyes scanned the information slowly.
Relationship prediction: Half-Sibling.
Her heart skipped.
“That… can’t be right.”
Lila leaned closer to the screen, reading the data again.
The genetic match was too strong to be a coincidence.
The markers were clear.
Shared parent: Javier Moreno.
The room suddenly felt too quiet.
Lila leaned back in her chair, trying to process what she had just read.
Her father had never mentioned another child.
Never even hinted at it.
Her mind raced through memories—family dinners, childhood conversations, stories about her parents’ past.
Nothing.
No clues.
No explanations.
Just silence.
“Lila?”
She looked up.
Alex stood beside her desk, holding a stack of papers. He immediately noticed the confusion on her face.
“What’s wrong?”
Lila turned the laptop toward him.
“I think… something is wrong with the DNA database.”
Alex studied the screen carefully.
His eyebrows slowly rose.
“Lila… this isn’t a mistake.”
She shook her head.
“It has to be.”
Alex pointed to the genetic markers.
“These sequences are identical. This kind of match only happens between siblings.”
Lila’s stomach tightened.
“A half-sibling,” she whispered.
Alex looked at her.
“Does your father know about this?”
“I don’t know,” Lila admitted.
The thought alone made her chest feel heavy.
If this was true, it meant there was a part of her father’s life she had never known.
A secret he had kept hidden for years.
Lila stared at the name listed on the file.
Daniel Reyes.
Age: 27.
Location: across the city.
Her fingers hovered over the contact information.
Alex spoke gently.
“You don’t have to do this right away.”
But Lila shook her head slowly.
“No.”
She took a deep breath.
“If he’s really my brother… he deserves to know the truth.”
Alex watched as she closed the laptop.
The discovery had clearly shaken her.
But beneath the shock, he could see something else in her eyes.
Determination.
Lila stood up.
“For years I thought I knew everything about my family,” she said quietly.
Alex nodded.
“And now?”
She looked toward the window where the evening sun painted the campus buildings in gold.
You
“Now I realize there are still parts of our past hiding in the shadows.”
Alex gave a small smile.
“Looks like the investigation isn’t over yet.”
Lila picked up her bag.
Somewhere out there was a man who shared her blood.
A brother she had never known existed.
And soon—
She was going to meet him.
