The dare
Clarissa or Rissa as her friends called her was at a sleepover. She didn’t want to be there, but since it was planned to cheer her up, she didn’t really have a choice. If she got to choose herself, she would have been sitting on her couch with a pint of ice cream and her comfort movie in the background. What happened? Well, Clarissa had just broken up with her boyfriend of two years after finding out he had been cheating on her with her best friend Chloe. The worst part was that she couldn’t tell Chloe that she knew because it would ruin their whole friend group dynamic. As it was, she was there and she was forced to participate in the conversations and games people came up with while pretending like she wasn’t mad at Choe.
“Okay, so I once read about this ritual that lets you sent letters to the devil himself. I don’t know how accurate it is or if it even works, but it could be fun to try.” Josh suggested.
“If we have everything we need, why not?” Erica asked.
“Yeah, we should. All you need is a pen, paper and matches. Do you have that, Clarissa?” Josh summed up. Yeah, to make things worse, Rissa couldn’t have declined the sleepover if she wanted to because her friends had just shown up at her apartment.
“Yeah, I should have those but I’m not sure about this. I mean, writing a letter to the devil?” She answered.
“Oh come on, it’s not like that ritual is real.” Chloe said.
“And that’s exactly how horror movies start.” Rissa said sarcastically. Normally, she might have just kept her mouth shut and went along with it, but because of her anger she couldn’t.
“I already tried it, but nothing happened. It’s just for a little fun and maybe some ranting on your part. No one will read it, unless it suddenly works, since we’re burning the letters anyway.” Josh reassured.
“Okay, but if something happens, I get to say ‘I told you so’.” Rissa said while getting up to get everything they needed.
“So, Josh, how do we do this?” Erica asked.
“First, you write your letter. In it you should ask all the things you want to know from the devil or write out what you want. For example; if Rissa wants David to get a rash on his private parts, all she has to do is mention it in the letter and boom, rash. I mean, that’s what should happen, but I haven’t read about a lot of success stories. Then, you set the letter on fire while saying this text.” He showed the girls the text that they would have to recite and continued his explanation. “Lastly, you hold the letter until its burned to ashes and that’s it. After that, it’s waiting for an answer which we probably won’t get.”
“Oh, let’s make this more fun. Clarissa, I dare you to ask him out in your letter!” Erica encouraged.
“What? No! aren’t we having this sleepover because I just broke up with David?” Rissa denied.
“Yeah, and who would be a better rebound than the devil himself? I’m sure he’s hot, whether that’s figuratively or litterally, I don’t know. Plus, getting a celestial being to go on even one date with you gives you bragging right for eternity.” Erica retorted.
“C’mon Clarissa, worst case scenario you get to go on a date with the devil, unless that’s what you want of course. Then the worst case scenario would be that you don’t get an answer.” Chloe said.
“No, worst case scenario is that this is real, he reads the letter, hates me and drags my soul to hell to suffer for all of eternity!” Clarissa protested.
“Please, it could be fun. I’ll finally tell you what happened at the party last month.” Josh negotiated. There had been a party last month and some mysterious things had happened that no one wanted to talk about. The thing was that Rissa hadn’t been there. She was sick at home and so completely missed everything.
“I’d think you’re the devil.” She paused before relenting. “Fine, but your info about that party better be good.”
“You won’t regret it, but first you write your letter.” Josh promised while gesturing for her to get what they needed. She got up to look for the stuff and handed everything out. After some encouragement, she started writing.
Dear Lucifer,
Did it hurt when you fell from heaven?Omg, no wrong pick-up line, I’m sorry. Well, since I’m doing terrible on theme pick-up lines let me continue.
Hey, how was heaven when you left it? That’s even worse. Let me try again.
Can I have your picture to prove to my friends that angels do exist? Well, that one is not that bad. Let me try one more.
I wasn’t sure if you were a beautiful angel or a sexy devil, but now that I’m close I see heaven in your eyes. Nope, who writes that in a letter to the devil himself? I should have brought typ-ex with me. Okay I can do better.
Are you an angel? Because even the heavens would be jealous of your beauty. Okay, I give up.
Roses are red violets are blue, Will you go out with me on Thursday? Friday works too.
Okay, I’m done. My friends told me to ask you out since I just broke up with my boyfriend, which brings me to what I want. I want revenge. I know who he cheated on me with. It’s my best friend, well ex-best friend I guess, but I can’t do anything about it without ruining our friend group. I want a subtle way to get revenge on her without completely ruining all of my friendships. I know this letter probably won’t be read, but it already feels better to have written it out.
Sincerely,
Clarissa King.
After that, she burned the letter while reciting the words. On one hand, she hoped it would work and she’d get her revenge, on the other, she didn’t want it to go too far and she didn’t know if she could trust the devil for that.
