—————————-NYRA’s POV

Best friends that made school life survivable, a flawless reputation, and teachers who practically adored me- I had it all until my dad’s job transfer landed me in a new school in a town that felt like a stranger.

I woke up to the blaring sound of the alarm in my new room that still lacked the homely feeling of my old one. Rays of sunshine streaming through the window behind my bed lit my room. After five minutes of motivating myself, I reluctantly woke up and started getting ready for the first day of my school. The crisp white shirt with an unfamiliar school logo didn’t feel like mine. Unlike my old uniform, the navy blue skirt didn’t have the mark of the coffee I once spilled while laughing too hard with my friends. Pushing away the memories of my old school, I tied my long black hair into a ponytail.

“RoRo, come downstairs and have breakfast. “ my mom shouted from the kitchen. Mom started calling me RoRo because it was the first word I said and she’s been calling me that ever since.

I hurriedly put on my socks and shoes, picked up my bag, and headed downstairs to eat.

My dad was deeply immersed in today’s newspaper, and my mom was humming a song while preparing toast for me. I put my bag down and joined Dad at the dining table. My mom placed a plate of tasty-looking toast and a cup of tea in front of me and I began eating.

The doorbell rang. “Go open the door RoRo, it must be Samar. ” I stopped devouring my breakfast and went to answer it.

I opened the door, and my cousin Samar’s grinning face greeted me. “Excited for your first day of school?!”. He asked ironically, knowing how much i hated the idea of going to a new school. I had been ranting about it ever since i found out that we are moving. “Shut up, idiot.” I said, lightly punching his shoulder. He followed me into the kitchen. “Hello Uncle and Aunty. How are you?!” Samar said greeting my parents.

“Hey Samar, We are good. Come sit, have something.” My Dad said, finally taking his eyes off the paper.

“No thanks, Uncle. I already had breakfast at home.”

“How are your mom and dad, Samar?!” my mom asked.

“They are doing well, Aunty.” Samar said taking a chair next to me.

“ What about Saksham?! When is he coming back from abroad?!” My mom asked. Saksham is Samar’s older brother, who lives abroad for work.

“ He is fine and he’s coming back soon.”

“ Hurry up Nyra, or we’ll get late for school. Trust me, you don’t wanna end up in detention on day one. ” Samar said to me.

“Yeah ,yeah, I am done. “ I said, drinking the last sip of my tea.

I got up and picked up my bag. “Let’s go.” I said to Samar.

“Good luck, Nyra.”, Dad said.

“I wouldn’t have needed this luck if your stupid company hadn’t transferred you here.” I said.

“ Oh c’mon. You know, once a legend said that change is difficult but necessary. “ Dad said, sharing his knowledge of useless philosophies.

“ I guess your legend was as stupid as your company. “

“ Don’t talk to your Dad like that RoRo” my mom said. “Im sure these last two years of your school will be the best ones. ” she added trying to lift up my mood.

“ That, we will see “ I said. “Bye. See you guys later.”

Samar and I got into his brand-new car, which he recently got for scoring 90 percent in grade 11. His parents are strict and very concerned about academics, so he always puts in extra efforts in studies to excel and avoid taunts and sarcastic comments from them. He is a year older than me, and we have been best friends ever since i gained consciousness. The only reason I am not bawling my eyes out like a kindergartener on his first day of school is because I know at least one person in this strange, unknown school.

Samar blasted some weird rap music, and we began driving to school. Looking out the window, I watched unfamiliar streets and places pass by, each one reminding me how much I missed my old hometown.

“You look like you’re about to cry,” Samar said, interrupting my thoughts. “Dawnlight High School isn’t that bad. I’m sure you’ll get along with everyone.”

“I had an amazing life at my old school, and now I’ll have to start from scratch,” I sighed.

“It’s okay. You’ve done it once, you can do it again.” He said reassuring me.

Samar’s phone rang, interrupting our conversation. “Hey Jennie.” He said in a soft, lovey-dovey voice.

Jennie is his girlfriend- a sweet and kind girl that gets along with everybody. They have been dating for three years now.

“Yeah, I will pick you up. “ Samar said on the phone. “Is Zayn coming too?!” ….. “Uhh, okk”….. “Yeah, Im coming in 10 minutes. See you!” He hung up.

“ Next stop - Jennie’s” he said with a smile on his face.

After 10-15 minutes of listening to Samar’s futile attempts at trying to cheer me up for the first day of school, we finally reached Jennie’s place. Jennie was already standing outside her house, in high spirits, excited for her senior year.

“Hey Babes” Jennie said entering the car. “What’s up Nyra?! Excited for the first day?!” She added.

“ She is feeling the opposite of excitement” Samar answered for me.

“Well, can’t blame her. Change is difficult.” She said.

“ Thanks, finally someone gets me.” I said, dramatically eyeing Samar.

“I get you too, okayy?!” Samar said making an unpleasant expression. “ I was never denying the fact that ‘change is difficult’ , I was just saying, What’s done is done and you should just accept it with an open heart. Also, Everything happens for a reason. Who knows you might end up liking this school even more than the previous one.”

“Ok, Mr. Optimism. Whatever you say.” I said, rolling my eyes at him.

“ Just try not to piss off teachers because they give detention as if giving free candies. Also, avoid getting into limelight or else you will end up on our school’s confession page which, trust me, is full of haters and roasters.” Jennie said giving me some valuable information that actually might help me.

“Yeah, I can do that. “ I said, nodding my head.

“Well, then you are all set for your first day.” she said, giving me a thumbs up.

After ten minutes, we finally reached our school. Dawnlight High School is huge compared to my old school.

I stepped out of the car in the parking lot, and everything felt strange and unfamiliar. New building, new faces - I felt as if I didn’t belong here. I missed the comforting vibe of my old school. I missed my friends. I missed everything, even my maths teacher that I hated with my whole being.

“I’m going to the ground for football practice.” Samar said, snapping me out of my thoughts.

“Aren’t you gonna take her to her class?!” Jennie asked .

“She’s not a kid. She will find it on her own.”

“You are such a useless brother.” Jennie said. “Don’t worry Nyra, let me take you to your class.”

“Bye girls. I will see you in class, Jen.” Samar said waving us off.

“Let’s go. Shall we?!” Jennie said lively.

I took a deep breath. “ Yeah, let’s go.” I said showing confidence though inside I was full of nervousness.

I took one final deep breath and started walking towards my new classroom beside Jennie.

New friendships? New enemies? New problems? A whole bunch of chaos?! Or a boring school life?!

I had no idea WHAT WAS COMING NEXT ?!!!
