Chapter 1: The Night it Rained

Mary was soft - but strong.

On the outside, she had a gentle voice, calm reactions, observant eyes.

She was polite. She avoided drama.

But on the inside, she was a deep thinker.

She felt everything intensely.

She cried alone.

She smiled in public.

She loved quietly - and when necessary, she left quietly.

She didn't trust easily.

Jack was the only one who ever saw the strength behind her silence.

But Mary didn't know that in less than five minutes, her entire world would collapse.

⸻

The rain was heavy that night.

Mary stood across the street, her hands shaking - not from the cold, but from what she had just seen.

Jack.

Standing under the café light.

With his ex-girlfriend.

Holding a red ring.

Laughing.

Too close.

Too familiar.

The way she touched his arm - like she still had the right.

Mary's chest tightened.

She told herself she was strong.

She told herself she wasn't the jealous type.

But her heart felt heavier than the rain-soaked air around her - as if something invisible was pressing against her chest, making it hard to breathe.

She adjusted her grip on the umbrella, but her fingers trembled anyway.

Jack didn't notice her.

Mary took one small step forward... then stopped.

She told herself she was overthinking.

But deep down, she knew something wasn't right.

She didn't call his name.

She didn't cry.

She just watched.

His ex leaned closer - smiling as if she had never left - and pressed a soft kiss against his cheek.

It lasted only a second.

But for Mary, it lasted forever.

Jack didn't pull away.

He didn't step back.

He didn't look uncomfortable.

He just stood there.

And that was enough.

The rain grew heavier.

Or maybe it was just her breathing.

Mary blinked once.

Twice.

Then she stepped back.

Slowly.

As if the ground beneath her had suddenly become unfamiliar.

The kiss was brief.

Too brief to matter.

Too small to destroy anything.

But it did.

Jack froze the moment her lips touched his cheek.

His smile faded - not completely, but enough.

His brows tightened slightly, as if something felt wrong.

He stepped back.

Not dramatically.

Just enough to create space.

Mary noticed.

Of course she did.

She noticed everything.

For one fragile second, her heart whispered:

Maybe I misunderstood.

But then the ex laughed softly - like she knew she still had power.

And Jack didn't look across the street.

He didn't see the girl standing in the rain for him.

He didn't see the quiet strength breaking behind calm eyes.

And that hurt more than a kiss.

Mary took one step back.

Then another.

Her vision blurred - not from tears, but from the rain mixing with the café lights.

She told herself to breathe.

To stay calm.

To leave with dignity.

But her fingers had been trembling for too long.

The umbrella slipped.

It didn't fall loudly.

Just a soft, hollow sound as it hit the wet pavement.

But in the quiet between laughter and rain...

It was enough.

Jack's head turned.

Slowly.

His eyes searched the street.

And then he saw her.

Standing there.

Soaked.

Still.

Looking at him - not with anger.

Not with tears.

But with something worse.

Disappointment.

Jack's eyes found hers.

For a second, he looked confused.

Then shocked.

"Mary-"

He stepped forward.

But she didn't move.

She didn't bend to pick up the umbrella.

She didn't wipe the rain from her face.

She just stood there.

Holding his gaze.

Calm.

Too calm.

The rain traced slowly down her cheeks, but she didn't blink.

If he looked closely enough, he would see it.

The hurt.

The question she wasn't asking.

The trust that had just cracked - not shattered.

Cracked.

The girl beside him turned, following his stare.

Her smile faded.

But Mary didn't look at her.

She only looked at Jack.

"Mary."

He didn't even look at the girl beside him this time.

He just stepped down from the café entrance and walked into the rain.

Without an umbrella.

Without thinking.

The ex called his name softly.

He didn't answer.

Water soaked through his shirt within seconds, but he didn't slow down.

Mary watched him approach.

Her face didn't change.

But inside?

Everything was shaking

He stopped a few steps away from her.

Close enough to see the slight tremble in her fingers.

Close enough to notice she hadn't picked up the umbrella.

"Why didn't you call me?" he asked quietly.

Not defensive.

Not angry.

Just confused.

Mary finally bent down and picked up the umbrella.

Her movements were slow. Controlled.

"I didn't want to interrupt," she said softly.

Her voice was gentle.

Too gentle.

And that was when Jack realized something was wrong.

Very wrong.

Her eyes lowered briefly.

Not in weakness.

In control.

Then she looked back at him.

"The ring," she said quietly.

Just that.

Two words.

But they carried everything.

Jack blinked. "What?"

"The red ring," she repeated, her voice steady. "Why was she holding it?"

No anger.

No raised voice.

Just a question.

The kind that demands truth.

Jack's expression shifted - confusion first.

Then realization.

Then something else.

Something complicated.

"It's not what you think," he said quickly.

Mary gave the smallest nod.

"That's what people say when it is."

The rain fell harder between them.

And for the first time, Jack didn't know what to say.

Jack looked at the ring in the ex's hand.

Then back at Mary.

His jaw tightened.

"It's nothing," he said finally.

Too quickly.

Mary noticed.

Of course she did.

Nothing doesn't sparkle like that.

Nothing doesn't cost more than a year of rent.

She tilted her head slightly.

"Nothing?" she repeated.

Her voice was still soft.

But something inside it had cooled.

Jack ran a hand through his wet hair.

"It's complicated."

That word.

Complicated.

Mary felt something inside her settle.

Not break.

Settle.

Like a door quietly closing.

"I see," she whispered.

And that was worse than anger.

Because when Mary says I see...

It means she's already stepping away.

Mary looked at him for a long moment.

Not angry.

Not crying.

Just waiting.

"If it's complicated," she said softly, "then explain it to me."

The rain softened slightly, as if even the sky was listening.

Jack opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

His eyes flickered - not with guilt.

With hesitation.

Calculation.

Fear.

And Mary saw it.

That was all she needed.

"You don't have to protect me from the truth," she continued gently. "I'd rather hear something painful than be left in the dark."

Her voice trembled at the last word.

Just slightly.

Jack stepped closer. "Mary, it's not about that."

"Then what is it about?" she asked.

Silence.

Not long.

But long enough.

The café lights reflected in the wet street between them like a line neither of them crossed.

Mary nodded slowly.

"I understand."

And she did.

He wasn't ready to let her into his world.

And she wasn't willing to love someone who kept doors locked.

She adjusted her umbrella again.

"This isn't about the ring," she said quietly. "It's about the space you keep between us."

Jack's chest tightened.

She turned.

Not dramatically.

Not angrily.

Just... calmly.

And began to walk away.

The rain followed her.

Jack stood there - watching the girl who never begged... choose herself.

" I dated him for three years but I know nothing about him
