Chapter 1

THE MIDNIGHT LIBRARY

Deep within the heart of the city sat a building most people avoided: The Midnight Library. It was a place that defied logic, opening its doors only at 10:00 PM and locking them tight at the first light of dawn. The teachers at the V.MID. National School warned their students that it wasn't a library at all, but a "route to hell." Rumors from the 90s still haunted the hallways—tales of two best friends who entered the library and were never seen again.

Despite the warnings, four 10th-grade friends—Veni, Ishu, Manu, and Dikshu—couldn't stop talking about it.

"We should go," Veni whispered during their break. "Just once."

Dikshu shook her head, her eyes wide with fear. "No way. It’s too dangerous. What if we disappear like the others?"

"It opens at 10:00 PM," Manu pointed out. "How would we even get there without our parents knowing?"

An opportunity arrived when a classmate announced their final school trip to a local theme park. Veni’s eyes lit up with a plan. They would tell their parents they were going on the trip, but instead, they would spend the night at the Midnight Library. Three of their parents agreed immediately, but Dikshu’s mother was hesitant. After two days of pleading, she finally gave in.

To make the lie believable, Ishu arranged for her private driver to pick them all up, ostensibly for the trip. Once the driver left the street, the four friends turned toward the dark, imposing silhouette of the library.

As they stepped inside, the massive doors slammed shut and vanished into the wall. The library was a labyrinth of endless shelves, but strangely, it was also stocked with food and water.

Veni saw a book flying through the air. She jumped, caught it, and began to read. To her horror, the book described her own life, but the ending said she had died. Desperate, she sat at a nearby table, took a pencil and eraser, and rewrote the ending: The main character lives. As soon as she finished, the book snapped shut and flew back to its shelf.

Suddenly, a loud scream echoed through the aisles. It was Ishu. She claimed she had seen a man from the 90s—one of the missing boys—wandering the stacks.

"It’s just an illusion," Manu tried to comfort her, though her own voice trembled. "You're just scared because of the old photos."

Before they could leave, two pale twins appeared from the shadows. "Welcome to our library," they said in unison. "We are the owners."

A booming, distorted voice filled the room. "Answer our riddles correctly, and we will grant you more life. Answer incorrectly, and your punishment is a secret. You have ten rounds each. Ten minutes per riddle. Let the games begin."

THE RIDDLES

Dikshu went first. The speaker asked: "What has legs but cannot walk?" She answered "A chair" in two minutes. Correct.

Manu was next: "What has many teeth but cannot bite?" At the very last second, she guessed "A comb." Correct.

Ishu followed: "What has a tail but no body?" She answered "A coin" instantly. Correct.

Veni took the longest. Her riddle was: "What can fly without wings?" As the timer ticked down, the speaker growled, "Your time is up. You're cooked." In a panic, Veni cried out, "Time!" The speaker paused. Correct.

The voice offered a "Special Offer" for the final round. They could choose an Easy level (20 questions) or a Hard level (10 questions). If they failed the final round, they would be trapped in the library forever.

They chose the Hard level.

Dikshu's final riddle: "A man walks into a room completely wet, but there is no rain outside. Why?" She answered: "He was in a swimming pool." Correct.

Manu's final riddle: "A detective saw a dead fish on the floor next to a broken bowl. What happened?" She answered: "The bowl fell and broke." Correct.

Ishu's final riddle: "Mom put 10 cookies on the table. Later, only 9 were there. Who took the cookie?" She answered: "Someone in the house." Correct.

Veni's final riddle: "A boy said the wind broke the window, but the detective knew he was lying. Why?" Veni noticed the glass pieces were outside. "The window was broken from the inside!" she shouted. Correct

.THE FINAL TWIST

"How did you know the answers so fast?" Dikshu asked, breathless.

"I saw them on Instagram," Veni admitted with a small smirk.

The speakers crackled. "I cannot believe you answered them all," the voice hissed.

"We cleared the rounds!" Manu shouted at the walls. "Show your face! Let us go!"

The exit door remained sealed. The lights flickered and died, plunging them into total darkness. A heavy book fell from a shelf with a deafening thud. Dikshu reached down with trembling hands and picked it up. She opened it, and her scream cut through the silence. She threw the book away as if it had bitten her.

"What is it?" Veni asked, her heart hammering against her ribs.

THE  SECRET OF THE TWINS

Dikshu stared at the book she had thrown. It began to glow with an eerie, rhythmic light, its pages flipping violently by themselves. One page detailed Dikshu’s life; the others held the stories of Veni, Ishu, and Manu. But as they watched, the final pages of each section began to draw themselves, ink appearing out of thin air.

The lights in the library surged to a blinding brightness. The distorted voice stopped, and the heavy, terrifying atmosphere suddenly felt calm—normal, even. They realized this wasn't just a building full of books; it was a record of every soul's past, present, and future.

Desperate for answers, they split into two teams to search the 90s archives for the "Friends' Book" and the "Twins' Book." When Dikshu finally found the volume, the truth hit them like a physical blow.

The library’s owners were four friends from the 90s: Veer, Rey, Nyra, and Kyra. The book told a dark tale: Rey had poisoned Veer’s coffee. Nyra saw him do it but mistook the poison for sugar. After Veer died, Nyra and Kyra tried to go to the police, but Rey stopped them at the entrance and killed them both. Seconds later, Rey suffered a sudden heart attack and died on the spot.

Their souls had pleaded with God to remain on Earth. Their wish was granted, but with a condition: they were to guard the Midnight Library—a place for blessed, unfinished souls

THE HEARTBREAKING TRUTH

"So you understand now," the voice of the twins echoed, appearing before them as shimmering spirits. "We are God-blessed souls. And so are you."

"We are free?" Veni asked, her voice trembling. "Can we go home?"

"You are free," Rey's spirit replied.

The four girls ran out of the library. As soon as their feet hit the pavement, the building vanished into the night mist as if it had never existed. They began the long walk home, but as they reached the main road, they saw a crowd of people and flashing emergency lights. Their parents were there, weeping inconsolably.

The girls ran to them, screaming, "We’re here! We’re okay!" but their parents didn't look up. They didn't even hear them.

Then, they saw it. A crumpled car lay in the ditch. Inside were the bodies of four girls.

Veni, Ishu, Manu, and Dikshu had died in a car accident on the way to the library.

Because their deaths were so sudden, their souls couldn't accept it. God had granted them eight hours to realize the truth and fulfill their final wish: one last adventure together at the Midnight Library..

THE NEW GAURDIANS

Veni remembered the cousin she had read about in the flying book—the one she "saved" by rewriting the ending. She realized that by changing that story, she had actually saved her cousin’s life in the real world. Veni’s father received a call at that very moment: his niece, who had nearly died during a suicide attempt, had miraculously regained her heartbeat after two hours of flatlining.

The girls returned to the spot where the library usually stood. The glowing book appeared before them once more.

"The library doesn't call the living," the speaker whispered softly. "It answers the unfinished wishes of souls. Every page knows our past, except the one that decided our fate."

The spirits of Veer, Rey, Nyra, and Kyra appeared to pass on their torch. They handed the keys of the library to the new guardians: veni, manu, ishu, dikshu.

"You four are the best of friends," Rey said. "But remember... one day, four more girls like you will come. Whether they are alive or dead will be your choice to make. But they will come."

                                      THE END

{No Hero, No Heroine, No Love. Just a little friendship.}
