Prologue: Shadows Before the Storm.
The mountains slept under a shroud of mist, their jagged silhouettes lost in the darkness before dawn. Far below, in the heart of a land not yet at war, the Nexus pulsed. No one outside the old orders knew where it was hidden, but those who felt its presence could never forget it. It was more than a source of magic—it was the heartbeat of the world itself, ancient and restless. And like all great power, it drew the ambitious, the desperate, and the dangerous. From the high walls of the monastery, Whisper stood alone, the cold stone pressing against her palms. The night wind carried the scent of pine and distant rain, and somewhere in the distance, thunder rolled like an unspoken warning. She had heard stories of the Nexus before—rumors traded in taverns, shared by wandering scholars—but the tales had changed in the telling. Some said it could grant a person dominion over the elements, others that it could twist the fabric of life and death itself. What the stories never agreed on was the cost. Far to the east, cloaked in the starless black, a different figure stood beneath the vault of the sky. Cloaked in shadows, Draven watched the horizon as if waiting for it to bow before him. The Nexus called to him as it called to all, but he alone believed himself destined to master it. Power was not something to be feared—it was to be claimed, shaped, and bent until the world itself knelt. And if the cost was everything, so be it. Between them, the threads of fate were already tightening. Old allies were about to be tested, and strangers would soon become bound by a common cause. Some would fight for the balance the Nexus once kept. Others would seek to tear it apart. But none of them—not even Whisper—yet understood the truth. When the Nexus stirred, it did not promise victory or peace. It promised change. And change rarely came without blood.
