Chapter 1
I fling open the front door, bursting into the kitchen and dramatically leaning over to catch my breath. My mum is standing at the sink staring at me, I can feel her eyes on the back of my head. As soon as I can stand up again I catch her gaze, she seems very unamused - already frustrated with whatever she thinks my excuse for being home late will be. Little does she know that today I have quite the story to tell.
"Why are you so out of breath? And why are your shoes and jeans all covered in mud? I'm not going to clean them for you."
"Ok listen,"
I step closer to her, holding my hands out in a desperate attempt to stop her getting mad and not hearing me out.
"You will never believe what happened to me today."
I watch her face. There it is. That little spark of curiosity. A tiny crack in her neutral stare but still plenty enough to give me hope.
"I'm sure I won't. If you have something to say then get on with it, I don't have all day. I need to cook dinner." She crosses her arms, leaning back against the kitchen counter.
"Well, it all started when I decided to go for a walk in the forest after school. I was bored and wanted to get some fresh air, you always tell me to spend more time outside." I tilt my head, raising my eyebrows in a slightly cocky stare. She doesn't even blink.
