Chapter 1 : THE BOY IN WHITE

Chapter 1 Title: The Boy in White

Serena Vale did not believe in staring at boys.

Not even the fine ones.

Not even the rich ones.

And definitely not Adrian Hale.

Still, when he stepped out of the long black car that Monday morning, with his white shirt crisp against his skin and his expression as calm as ever, the entire front of Ivory Crown Academy seemed to pause.

Girls whispered.

Boys greeted him.

Even those who claimed not to care looked twice.

Serena rolled her eyes as she shut her locker.

“Please,” she muttered, adjusting the strap of her bag. “He’s just a boy, not a national treasure.”

Amara laughed beside her. “A very fine boy, though.”

Serena gave her best friend a dry look. “You too?”

“I’m only saying what the school is already thinking.”

Serena pushed her locker shut and started down the hallway, her heels tapping lightly against the polished floor. She was used to attention herself. At Ivory Crown Academy, Serena was not just another girl. She was beauty with confidence, sweetness with fire, and somehow, she carried it all without begging for anyone’s approval.

Still, there was something about Adrian Hale that annoyed her.

Maybe it was how effortlessly people moved around him.

Maybe it was the way teachers softened when they spoke to him.

Or maybe it was simply the fact that he looked too perfect, and Serena had never trusted perfect things.

By lunch break, she had almost forgotten about him.

Almost.

Until Mrs. Dalia Hart walked into Literature class with a stack of files and an expression that meant trouble for someone.

“I have an announcement,” she said, placing the files on her desk. “Your end-of-term literary project will be done in pairs.”

The class groaned instantly.

Serena leaned back in her chair, already bored.

Mrs. Hart ignored the noise and continued. “These pairs were selected carefully. You will work together for the next six weeks. Your performance will affect a major part of your final grade.”

Now that got everyone’s attention.

Mrs. Hart began calling names.

Noah Bennett with Lila Monroe.

Tessa Quinn with Ethan Cole.

Amara with Maya Sloan.

Serena half-listened, twirling her pen between her fingers.

Then—

“Serena Vale with Adrian Hale.”

The room changed.

Serena’s head lifted slowly.

Across the class, Adrian looked up too.

For one second, nobody spoke.

Then the whispers began.

Bianca Laurent’s face tightened before she quickly hid it.

Noah grinned like he had just been handed premium gist.

Amara turned in her seat so fast she nearly dropped her book.

Serena blinked. “Excuse me?”

Mrs. Hart looked up. “Is there a problem, Miss Vale?”

Yes, Serena wanted to say.

A very tall, quiet, expensive-looking problem.

But the class was already watching, and Serena Vale did not embarrass herself in public.

So she straightened her shoulders and smiled lightly.

“No, ma’am.”

Mrs. Hart nodded and continued reading the other pairs, but Serena was no longer listening.

Because Adrian Hale was walking toward her desk.

He stopped beside her, one hand in his pocket, his face calm in the most unfair way.

Up close, he was even more annoying. His jaw was sharp, his eyes were clear, and his voice, when he spoke, was low and soft.

“Looks like we’re partners.”

Serena looked at him, refusing to be impressed.

“Looks unfortunate.”

Something flickered in his eyes.

Amusement.

“I’ll try not to make your life too hard.”

Serena stood, picking up her book. “Please do. I’m very attached to my peace.”

Amara bit her lip to stop herself from laughing.

Noah was already enjoying everything too much.

Adrian surprised her by smiling.

Not a proud smile.

Not a mocking one.

A real one.

And for a strange second, Serena forgot the next thing she wanted to say.

It was small.

Quick.

But dangerous.

Because there was something about soft smiles that could ruin a girl’s common sense.

Later that afternoon, Serena was walking toward the school parking lot when she noticed her mother’s car had not arrived yet. She sighed and checked the time on her phone.

Typical.

The compound was quieter now, with only a few students left around.

She adjusted her bag and turned toward the waiting area—

Then stopped.

Adrian was standing a short distance away, leaning against his car, speaking to someone on the phone. His tone was calm, but his face was not.

Serena would have ignored him if she hadn’t heard the next words.

“I said I understand,” he murmured. “But if my father’s name is involved again, don’t call me here.”

Her steps slowed.

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“No. I’m not discussing that death over the phone.”

Serena froze.

Death?

Before she could think properly, Adrian turned—

and saw her.

For one sharp moment, neither of them moved.

Then his voice dropped.

“How long have you been standing there?”

Serena swallowed, hating the way her heartbeat suddenly changed.

“Long enough to know you sound even worse on private calls.”

His eyes stayed on hers, unreadable now.

The soft boy from class was gone.

This version of Adrian Hale felt different.

Still quiet.

Still controlled.

But colder.

Then he ended the call and slipped his phone into his pocket.

“You should be careful, Serena.”

Her brows pulled together. “Was that a threat?”

He took a step closer.

“No.”

A pause.

“Just advice.”

Before she could answer, a black car rolled in through the gate.

Her mother’s driver.

Adrian stepped back, the unreadable look still on his face.

Serena climbed into the car without another word, but all through the ride home, one sentence stayed in her head like a shadow she could not shake.

I’m not discussing that death over the phone.

And for the first time since meeting Adrian Hale, Serena began to wonder if the most beautiful boy in Ivory Crown Academy was hiding something ugly.

Very ugly.

End of part 1.

If you want, I can go straight into Chapter 2.
