Chapter 1 The Shadow of Sterling
The rain in Seoul had a way of washing away everything except memories.
Asher Vance stood in the middle of the cold, minimalist living room, his fingers trembling as he adjusted the strap of his worn-out duffel bag. The apartment was a masterpiece of glass and steel—expensive, hollow, and hauntingly beautiful. It felt like a cage designed by an architect who didn't believe in warmth.
"Just a temporary arrangement, Asher," he whispered to himself, his voice swallowed by the shadows. His friend Jasper had been adamant. “The owner is a high-ranking executive at The Sterling Group. He’s never home. You’ll be a ghost, and he’ll be a stranger. It’s the only place safe from Victor’s men.”
Asher walked toward the floor-to-ceiling window. Three years. Three years of running, of working double shifts at a hotel reception, of hiding Milo in the outskirts of Busan, all because of one man’s cruelty. He had sacrificed his soul to keep the Sterling bloodline from destroying itself.
Suddenly, the heavy oak door groaned on its hinges.
Asher froze. The click of expensive Italian leather shoes echoed against the marble floor. A scent filled the room—cold cedarwood and expensive rain—a scent that Asher would recognize even in his grave.
Killian Sterling stepped into the light.
He looked like a king returning from a war he had already won. His dark coat was damp, his hair swept back, revealing a jawline that could cut glass. But it was his eyes that stopped Asher’s heart—they were no longer the warm, amber pools that used to look at Asher with adoration. They were frozen. Dead.
Killian stopped mid-stride. His briefcase hit the floor with a dull thud.
"Jasper told me the new roommate was a 'quiet one'," Killian’s voice was a low, dangerous vibration. "He didn't mention he was bringing a corpse back to life."
Asher couldn't breathe. "Killian..."
"Don't," Killian hissed, taking a predatory step forward until he was inches away. The intensity of his Alpha aura made Asher’s knees weak. "You don't get to say my name. Not after you burned my world to the ground without a word of goodbye."
"I had no choice," Asher gasped, his back hitting the cold glass window.
Killian leaned in, his lips inches from Asher’s ear, his breath hot against his skin. "There is always a choice, Asher. You chose to leave. Now, I choose to make this apartment your purgatory. Stay in your room. Don't touch my things. And most importantly... don't expect me to look at you and see anything other than a traitor."
Killian pulled away, his eyes lingering on Asher’s pale face for a fraction of a second—a flicker of pain crossing his features before it was replaced by a mask of stone. He turned and walked toward his suite, the sound of his door slamming shut echoing like a final judgment.
Asher sank to the floor, his eyes blurred with tears. He was back in the lion’s den, and this time, the lion didn't want to love him—he wanted to tear him apart.
