Summary

For Elias Thornebrook, an ordinary March morning loses all balance the moment a glowing silhouette emerges from the crowd. Enchanted by eyes as deep and blue as the morning sky, he encounters the purest and most agonizing coincidence of his life. But this connection turns into his heaviest trial before it even has a name: because the stranger who made his heart skip a beat for the first time is the same girl his best friend has just declared "the love of his life." Walking the thin line between loyalty and desire, silence and confession, every day for Elias is now a quiet war fueled by the fear of losing both the girl he’s drawn to and the friend he trusts. Some stories are told by being lived; others are simply entrusted to the silence. And for Elias, silence has become his only faithful confidant.

Chapter 1: March 22nd – The First Flicker

Dear Diary,

I woke up to that heavy, leaden atmosphere that usually defines the start of the week. Mondays always feel like they’re approaching from behind a thick veil of fog—everything is a bit louder, a bit more exhausting. Without thinking much, I threw on my dark navy cable-knit sweater, the one thing that actually makes me feel like "me." My reflection in the mirror was just your average high school senior. Or so I thought.

The moment I stepped into the school courtyard, the sharp but fresh March wind hit my face. Right then, something shifted in the middle of the crowd. It was as if the camera lens finally focused, and everything else just blurred out of existence.

There was this girl... someone I’m certain I’ve never crossed paths with in these halls or this yard before. She was about 5'6", and she moved with such grace, as if she wasn't walking on pavement but on a thin layer of ice. The sunlight seemed to break and scatter through her pale blonde hair. When she turned her head for a split second, I could make out the clarity of her eyes even from that distance—a blue as cold and deep as the morning sky. Watching her disappear into the noisy chaos of the classroom across from mine left this strange hollow feeling in my chest. I didn't know who she was, but her being there changed the entire vibration of the school.

On the way home, my mind was a total wreck, occupied only by that image. I tried to crawl back into my own world the second I got inside. I called Martin and Stephen; we dived into our games with our headsets on like always. The explosions on the screen, the shouting, the jokes... it all felt like static. I put on a movie later, then lost myself in my usual playlist of melancholic songs.

Now, I’m lying in bed, watching the shadows dance on the ceiling. You know what's weird? Despite all the noise, the gaming, and the music, the way her blonde hair caught the wind is still stuck behind my eyelids. How does a complete stranger—someone whose name I don’t even know—manage to erase every other detail of my day and take center stage?

My phone suddenly vibrated on the nightstand.

Martin calling.

I didn't want to answer. I wanted to just stay there with the image of her in my head, not wanting to break that silent daydream. As the light from the screen cast a pale rectangle on the ceiling, the phone went quiet. I didn't call him back right away; I just watched the shadows on the ceiling wave like the strands of her hair. But my mind wouldn't rest. Who was she? Where did she come from?

Curiosity eventually defeated the silence. My fingers moved independently of my will, calling Martin back. He’s the most reliable friend I have—the guy who knows every corner and every rumor in this school. If anyone knew anything, it was him.

"Dude, why didn't you pick up earlier?" Martin asked, his voice sounding more hyped than usual.

Just as I opened my mouth to say, "I saw someone in the courtyard today, she's in the classroom across from us, blonde hair..." Martin beat me to it.

"Elias, you won't believe it, but I think I just saw the love of my life! There’s a new girl in the class across from ours. She's about 5'6", blonde hair, and her eyes are such a piercing blue... I haven't been able to think about anything else since I saw her by the cafeteria. I think I’m actually falling for her; I have to find a way to talk to her tomorrow."

A knot formed in my throat. Every word I wanted to say turned into a poisoned arrow, sinking back into my chest. "Oh, really? That’s cool," was all I could manage. He didn't even notice the sudden drop in my voice, just kept rambling on with his own excitement.

After hanging up, the air in the room felt like it turned to ice. That shimmering dream I had built in my mind just moments ago was now lying in ruins before me. Martin... my best friend. Life has a really twisted sense of humor. The very first spark I felt for a girl—one whose name I don’t even know—was extinguished by my best friend’s sentence.

I turned off the light. I lay there in the dark with my back to the door, but this time, thinking about those blue eyes actually hurts. I’ve never dreaded going to school as much as I do for tomorrow morning.
