Chapter 1

Elena shoved the back door of the club open with her shoulder, breathing hard. Tonight was supposed to be over. She should already be home, safe behind her bedroom door. But a large hand grabbed her arm and yanked her back into the shadows of the dark hallway.

“Let go,” Elena snapped, trying to twist her arm free. Her voice shook a little even though she tried to hide it.

A cold, low voice answered right against her ear. “You’re not going anywhere tonight, Elena.”

She froze. She had never told him her name. Slowly she turned. The man stood way too close. Tall, broad shoulders, expensive black suit. His eyes were dark, icy, but something burned behind them. Like he had been watching her for a long time.

“Who the hell are you?” Elena demanded, her voice louder than she wanted. “Let go of my arm or I’ll scream right now.”

The man smiled thinly. The smile didn’t reach his eyes. “Scream if you want. No one’s coming. This club is mine.”

Elena’s heart slammed against her ribs. Midnight. Everyone in this city knew you didn’t mess around inside Midnight. She had only worked the bar tonight as extra help because she needed fast cash for bills. Now she regretted every second.

“What do you want?” she asked, still trying to pull her arm away. His fingers felt like steel. “I was just doing my shift. I don’t know you.”

He leaned down a little. His breath brushed her cheek. “You saw something you weren’t supposed to see in the VIP room. That deal. You think I didn’t notice?”

Elena swallowed hard. She had carried a tray of drinks to the back earlier. The VIP door had been cracked open. She saw another man hand over a big black bag. This guy in front of her nodded slowly. Cash. A lot of it. And the glint of metal that looked like guns. She had turned away fast, pretending she saw nothing. But apparently it was too late.

“I didn’t see anything,” Elena lied quickly. “I was just passing by. I don’t care about other people’s business. Let me go.”

The man let out a low laugh that made the hairs on her neck stand up. “Too late, baby. Now you know my name. Rafael Voss. And you… you belong to me now.”

“I don’t belong to anyone!” Elena snapped, trying to kick his shin. Rafael dodged easily and pushed her against the wall. Not rough, but firm enough to let her know he could be rougher if he wanted.

“You’ve got a debt,” Rafael said flatly, his voice still low. “Your little brother borrowed from the wrong people. Two hundred million rupiah. Due tomorrow. If it’s not paid, they’ll take your brother. Or they’ll take you. Your choice.”

Elena’s face went pale. Her brother really was stupid. Always making trouble. But she didn’t know it was this bad. “How do you know about that?” she whispered, her voice almost gone. “Who are you really?”

“I know everything that happens in this city,” Rafael answered. He tilted her chin up with one finger. His touch was cold, but Elena couldn’t look away from his eyes. “I can pay that debt. Right now. But there’s a condition.”

Elena held her breath. Her heart felt like it was going to explode. “What condition?”

“You come with me. Tonight. You stay at my house until I get bored. You do what I say. No questions. No drama.”

Elena laughed bitterly even though her stomach twisted. “You’re crazy. I’m not some whore you can buy whenever you feel like it.”

Rafael’s eyes narrowed. “I didn’t call you a whore. I said you’re mine. There’s a difference.” He leaned in closer, his lips almost touching her ear. “And you’re going to learn exactly what that difference is, Elena. Slowly. I don’t like rushing.”

Elena shoved at his chest as hard as she could. But it was like pushing a wall. He didn’t move at all. “What if I say no? What if I scream right now and call the police?”

Rafael shrugged like the question amused him. “Go ahead and scream. The police in this city eat from my hand. Tomorrow morning your brother disappears. Or worse. They don’t play around with debts. You know that, right? Or do you want me to show you your brother’s last messages with the loan shark?”

Elena stayed silent. She remembered her brother had been sending panicked texts lately. But she thought it was just small money problems. “You’re lying,” she said, but her voice wasn’t sure.

“I don’t need to lie,” Rafael replied calmly, but there was an edge that made her shiver. “I already paid half of it this afternoon as a deposit. I’ll pay the rest tomorrow morning… if you come with me now. Or do you want to see your brother hanging in front of your house tomorrow?”

Elena felt her knees go weak. She tried to take a deep breath. “Why me? Why not someone else? I’m just a regular waitress. I have nothing you want.”

Rafael stared at her for a long moment. His eyes were dark, but there was a small fire in them that made Elena feel… strange. Not just fear. Something else. Something dangerous and warm in her stomach.

“Because you saw the deal,” he said quietly. “And because I like the way you fight back. Most people bow their heads the second I speak. You don’t. That’s… interesting.”

Elena shook her head hard. “I’m not interested in you. I hate men like you. Men who think they can buy people with money.”

Rafael smiled again. This time the smile was wider, but still cold. “Good. I like the ones who hate. It’s more fun when you fight first. Later you’ll see the difference between hate and… something else.”

“What something else?” Elena asked quickly, even though she already knew she wouldn’t like the answer.

Rafael brought his face even closer. So close she could feel the heat of his breath. “You’ll find out. Tonight if you want. But I won’t force that part. Not yet. First you come with me. My house is safe. Your brother is safe. The debt is gone. Everything’s settled.”

Elena bit her lower lip. Her mind raced. She could run right now. But Rafael would catch her again. Or worse, the loan sharks would show up at her house tomorrow. Her brother was only eighteen. Still a kid. She couldn’t let that happen.

“How long do I have to stay at your house?” she asked softly, her voice almost giving in.

Rafael raised an eyebrow. “Until I get bored. Could be a week. Could be a month. Could be longer. Depends on you.”

“And if I try to run?” she challenged, even though she knew it was a stupid question.

Rafael chuckled softly. “Try it. I have people everywhere. You won’t even reach the front gate before I pull you back. And next time I won’t be this gentle.”

Elena stayed quiet again. The seconds felt endless. Music from inside the club still hummed faintly, the bass echoing in her chest like an unsteady heartbeat. She could hear Rafael’s calm, steady breathing. While hers was fast and short.

“Can I still work while I’m at your house?” Elena asked suddenly, trying to find a crack. “I don’t want to just sit around. I have other bills.”

Rafael shook his head slowly. “No work. You stay there. You eat what I tell you to eat. You wear what I give you. You sleep in the room I choose. Simple.”

“You’re treating me like an object,” Elena said, her voice rising again. “I’m a person, Rafael. I have a life.”

“Your life is me now,” Rafael answered flatly. “And you’ll get used to it. Slowly you’ll see this is better than your brother dying or you being sold to someone else.”

Elena felt tears starting to gather in her eyes, but she held them back. She didn’t want to cry in front of this man. “You’re really a bastard,” she said quietly.

“Yes,” Rafael replied without hesitation. “But the bastard who can save your brother tonight too.”

Elena stared into his eyes for a long time. Cold. But there was something behind the coldness. Something that made her stomach twist—not just fear. There was a strange pull she hated. A pull that made her want to run away and want to know more at the same time.

“If I go with you,” Elena said finally, her voice almost a whisper, “you promise the debt will be paid tomorrow morning? And my brother won’t be bothered again?”

Rafael nodded once. “I promise. I don’t like breaking promises. Bad for business.”

Elena took a long breath. “I hate you,” she said again, louder this time.

Rafael smiled. This time the smile felt real. “Good. I like the ones who hate. They’re usually the hardest to forget.”

He released her arm, but immediately took her hand in a firm grip. Not painful, but impossible to pull away. His fingers were warm, a contrast to his cold voice.

“Let’s go,” Rafael said. “The car is waiting out front. It’s getting late.”

Elena walked with him. Her legs felt heavy, like they were made of lead. The back hallway of the club felt darker than usual. The club door closed behind them with a soft sound. The night air brushed Elena’s face, cold and sharp.

They walked past rows of luxury cars parked outside. Rafael didn’t speak anymore. But his grip on her hand stayed tight. Elena tried to pull away once, but Rafael only pulled back a little harder.

“Don’t even try,” he said quietly without looking at her. “You already said yes.”

“I didn’t say yes completely,” Elena shot back quickly. “I can still change my mind.”

Rafael stopped in front of a long black car with the door already open. The driver stood beside it, his face blank like nothing was happening. Rafael looked at Elena again. Their eyes met under the dim streetlight.

“If you change your mind now,” he said softly, “I call that guy. Your brother’s debt becomes their problem immediately. And I won’t pay anything. You want that?”

Elena stared at the car. Shiny black. The back door open like a mouth ready to swallow her. She knew once she got in, everything would change. She wouldn’t be able to get out that easily again.

“I’m getting in,” she said finally, her voice small.

Rafael nodded, satisfied. He guided her into the back seat, then slid in beside her. The car door closed with a soft click that sounded very final.

The car started moving slowly, leaving the club area. City lights flashed past the windows. Elena looked outside, her hand still held by Rafael. She felt the heat from his palm. She felt her own heartbeat racing out of control.

“My house isn’t far,” Rafael said suddenly, breaking the silence. “You can rest there. Tomorrow morning I’ll handle the debt. You don’t need to worry about it anymore.”

Elena turned to him. “And if I ask to call my brother first? Tell him I’m okay?”

Rafael shook his head. “Tomorrow. Tonight you’re mine first. No calls. No messages. No one knows where you are.”

Elena felt her chest tighten. “You really control everything, don’t you?”

“Yes,” Rafael answered shortly. “And you’ll get used to it. Or you can keep fighting. I don’t mind. I actually prefer it.”

Elena didn’t answer. She just stared at the road ahead that grew darker. The car sped up. The city started to fade behind them. Rafael’s house must be in some fancy suburb, where people like him hid from the normal world.

Elena felt Rafael’s thumb slowly brush the back of her hand, almost absentmindedly. The touch was light, but enough to make her shiver. She tried to pull her hand away gently, but he didn’t let go.

“Don’t fight too hard tonight,” Rafael said quietly. “Tomorrow is still long.”

Elena shot him a sharp look. “I won’t stop fighting.”

Rafael smiled thinly in the darkness of the car. “Good. I was hoping you’d say that.”

The car kept moving. Streetlights became fewer. Elena knew that once they reached that house, the door would close. And she wouldn’t be able to leave again—at least not without fighting the world that now owned her.

The night grew darker. And Elena felt herself already trapped. Not just because of her brother’s debt. But because of Rafael’s dark eyes that kept watching her, as if she had belonged to him from the very first second they met in that back hallway of the club.

The car slowed at a tall automatic gate that opened smoothly. Elena saw a large house in the distance, its lights glowing dimly. The house that would become her prison starting tonight.

She took a deep breath.

“Welcome home,” Rafael said softly, his voice full of satisfaction. “From now on, you’re mine, Elena. Completely.”

The car stopped right in front of the entrance. The driver opened the door. Rafael stepped out first, then held out his hand to Elena.

Elena stared at that hand for a long moment. She could refuse. But she knew the consequences.

Finally she placed her hand in his.

And the front door of the house opened wide, welcoming her into the darkness that had just begun.
