Summary

The story follows Ashley, a kind and trusted girl, and Rose, her mysterious and observant best friend. While they seem inseparable, Ashley begins to feel uneasy when Rose starts predicting her words exactly and behaving in an unsettlingly precise way. At the same time, people in their town begin treating Ashley differently, avoiding her and spreading vague rumors. Ashley eventually realizes that private things she shared in confidence are being repeated to others—things only Rose could have known. When Ashley confronts her, Rose denies it convincingly, leaving Ashley confused and uncertain, as Rose’s sincerity makes it hard to tell whether she’s guilty or not.

Chapter 1

Shadows in White

The first time anyone saw them together, they thought they understood the story.

Ashley, always in soft blues, gentle in the way she spoke, the kind of girl who held doors open and remembered birthdays. There was something quiet about her kindness—something that made people feel safe without knowing why.

And then there was Rose.

Rose wore white like it meant something. Not innocence—no, never that. It was too deliberate. Too perfect. Her smile lingered just a second longer than it should. Her eyes noticed everything, even when she pretended not to.

They were inseparable.

That’s what everyone said.

---

It started small.

Ashley began noticing things that didn’t quite make sense.

Rose would finish her sentences before she spoke them. Not in a playful way—but precisely. Word for word. Like she’d already heard them somewhere before.

“You were going to say you’re tired, right?” Rose smiled one afternoon.

Ashley froze.

“I… yeah. I was.”

Rose tilted her head, pleased. “I know you.”

That should have felt comforting.

It didn’t.

---

The town loved Ashley.

They trusted her. They came to her with problems, secrets, quiet confessions whispered like prayers. And Ashley listened. She always listened.

But lately… those same people started looking at her differently.

A friend avoided her gaze.

A teacher hesitated when calling her name.

A rumor spread—something vague, something unkind.

Ashley didn’t understand.

Until she heard her own words… repeated back to her.

Private things. Things she had only ever told one person.

“Rose,” Ashley said one evening, her voice barely steady, “have you been… telling people things I said?”

Rose looked up slowly, her expression soft, almost hurt.

“Why would I do that?”

Ashley didn’t have an answer.

Because Rose sounded sincere.

Because Rose always sounded sincere.
