Chapter 1
The Story of Nuux: Part 1
My name is Nuux. I live in a city where most people perform hard labor, while the rest are wealthy property owners. I come from a family that is wealthy on my mother's side, but my father is a poor man who works as a mechanic. I am currently at the age to enter university.
In the city where I live, there is a disease unknown to the rest of the world. This disease affects youth between the ages of 14 and 21. It is like an insect that takes over the brain, completely changing the person. Up until now, I have survived and remained healthy.
One night, I sensed a heavy rain falling, but when I looked outside, there was no rain. When I returned to bed, I felt something moving on my body, as if something was crawling over me. That night, I fell asleep and had a terrifying dream.
The Outbreak
In the dream, I saw all the youth of the city starting extreme riots—violence never seen before. When I woke up in the morning, I saw that the dream had become a reality; the rioting was still ongoing.
Bewildered, I went to my mother’s house. My grandfather had always hated me because I am the son of a poor man. However, my grandmother was always kind to me and would do whatever I wanted. On that day of the riots, the wealthy were ordered to help others. Consequently, my grandfather brought many soldiers to act as guards.
The riots were carried out only by young males between the ages of 14 and 21. No one younger or older was involved. The city remained in this state for three days, during which the youth ate nothing.
By the third day, the situation worsened—they began to eat anyone who went outside. They were eating human flesh and would taste nothing else. Shaking with fear, my mother asked me: "My son, what is happening inside your eyes?".
Immediately, my grandfather pulled out a gun and said: "This one is one of them too... we must kill him". But my grandmother quickly intervened, saying: "No! Nothing has happened to him yet". To our surprise, my grandmother brought out a small plant that was silver or a shining white—I had never seen a plant like it before.
She said to me: "My grandson, keep this in your molar... if you feel any confusion...".
