Womb

It was 4 a.m. in the operation room of a hospital.

A woman named Elsa cried and screamed in pain not from her heart, but from the physical pain. Her heart was filled with happiness, because her baby was about to come into this world.

With one final push, the baby came out from the safe place of her mother’s womb. The doctor took the baby it was a baby girl. The doctor gently placed her on her mother’s chest, where both the mother and father looked at her with tears of happiness.

Two hours later, after all the cleaning and procedures, they were moved to a normal ward. Elsa lay on the hospital bed with her baby in her arms, her husband sitting beside her. They looked at their baby girl who slept peacefully in her mother’s hands.

Suddenly, the calm expression on the baby’s face changed.

She started breathing hard

.

Fear filled Elsa’s and her husband’s eyes. Their hearts began to pound. Elsa tried to soothe the baby but the baby only cried harder, struggling to breathe. The baby’s father ran to get the doctor, bringing them back in a hurry.

When the doctor entered the room, they quickly took the baby. Seeing her worsening condition, a nurse rushed in with oxygen. The doctor fixed it to the baby and quickly gave an injection, which made her a little calmer but she was still getting weaker.

Seeing all of this filled Elsa’s eyes with tears and the same for her husband.

The doctor said they needed to take the baby for some tests. At first, Elsa refused to let them take her but her husband told her it was for their baby’s safety. Reluctantly, she agreed, and the doctors took their baby away.

Every moment without the baby made Elsa’s and her husband’s fear grow stronger. Even though Elsa’s body was in pain and exhausted from giving birth just hours ago, none of that mattered to her now.

She just wanted her baby back.

After about thirty minutes, the doctor returned.

“Mr. Nick and Mrs. Nick…”

" we are really sorry. Your baby’s heartbeat is dropping very fast. We tried to find the cause, but we couldn’t. There are no visible problems in her body — she looks completely healthy. But her heartbeat keeps dropping.”

" We…..”

“we suggest that you spend this time with your baby. We are truly sorry.”

The words didn’t reach Elsa’s ears. Her mind went blank.

She saw the nurse bring the baby back and place her on the bed. The baby looked pale. Her heartbeat was slow. She wasn’t crying or opening her eyes only breathing weakly.

Tears began to fall from Elsa’s and Nick’s eyes.

Nick leaned down and kissed his baby’s forehead. His tears fell onto her cheek and he gently wiped them away.

Elsa took the baby into her arms and laid her against her chest. She slowly ran her fingers over the baby’s head and began to speak softly.

“Baby… I’m sorry. I failed to take care of you. Mama is really sorry…”

Her voice broke as tears poured endlessly from her eyes.

“Baby, can you open your eyes and look at me and Daddy? We want to see your eyes… we want you to see our faces. I’m sorry you couldn’t see us. Mama really wanted to see your eyes..the eyes that would look at us with love and trust…”

Elsa sobbed as she felt her baby’s heartbeat growing slower.

“Baby, please wake up… don’t you want to drink milk from Mama?”

She cried, thinking about how she never even got the chance to feed her baby.

“Baby… p-please look at us one last time…”

“Please…”

The baby’s heartbeat stopped completely.

The room filled with loud screams and cries but not from physical pain but from the pain in her heart.

The pain of loss.

Elsa held the baby tightly, crying uncontrollably, while Nick hugged Elsa and cried with her.

“I should have kept you safely inside my womb… so you wouldn’t have had to leave us…”

The End...
