Chapter 1: Water runs clear

A slick white car with a logo of four rings hooked consecutively on one another, pulled over at the parking lot.

Two doors swung open, where a heel meant to mark a statement stabbed into the concrete ground as a girl stepped out from the passenger seat. Followed by a peer from the back seats.

With alluring makeup and clothes that were doing their very best to show off more skin than humanly possible, the girls fit in perfectly with the rest of the people making their way towards a peculiar building lit with neon blue lights meant to draw more than just attention.

Night Creatures

One of the most successful if not the most insane nightclubs whispered about through the entire city of Emory.

"Are you coming or not?" Came Arianna's Impatient voice as she fixed herself up in the small side-door mirror, before she turned to look at the youngest girl who was still seated inside the car as if she wasn't planning on getting out. A suggestive whistle sounding from somewhere.

"c.. can you give me a minute? " she spoke in a low voice while she tried to compose herself.

Genuinely rethinking her coming here.

This place wasn't for her and she knew that, but she'd already planned to take a dive into adult life, as everyone at school had called it, and this was the first step.

If she pulled back now, who knew when she'd get the courage to try again?

She thought. Spanning her gaze towards the street that was bustling with so much life it was enough to cause a feeling much like she was seeing nasty little bugs adamant on chasing her out of her own skin.

On second thought..

"Just get out of the car." Arianna bit with a tone that lacked patience.

Vidia flinched and bit into her lower lip. Instantly regretting her decision.

Just why the hell did she give into peer pressure?

Why the hell did she ask to come here?

She cried without shedding any real tears.

"Is it- is it always this crowded?" She tried to distract her worried mind as she plastered her gaze over the road. Looking at the street that was practically bubbling with life. All the way down to the club's entrance, where a line of sorts stretched to one side of the building.

With the parking lot filled with women sitting on bonnets of cars they wouldn't even imagine themselves owning, some dancing their way into the night as if the club's infectious energy had already poisoned them far beyond recovery, others balancing cigarettes or beers between fingertips while leering away at those unfortunate enough to fall on their radar.

With up to five different songs sounding from different directions, Vidia wasn't even sure where to look anymore as she realized that looking around might have been a mistake on itself, as her unease only grew bulky ends.

Not to mention the male whistling, the gruff voices cackling into the night like demons lurking from beyond the shadows, women cheering and laughing with shrill voices that quickly had Vidia thinking of that one girl from class who drove boys mad but couldn't even catch the appeal of one teacher.

This place was a mess.

It was a sharp contrast to everything she believed in. Stepping out of the car tonight would be the same as trampling over every single boundary she'd sworn never to cross.

"It's a Friday night. Of course, it is more crowded today," Arianna answered. That curt, impatient note she used too often than necessary flanking her words.

Vidia's shoulders folded along with her as she shrank in her seat.

Which made the brunette on the driver's seat release a small sigh at the display on her rear view mirror.

She stepped out of the car.

Giving the door a light push to close it with a gentle thud, before she looked to Arianna through the top of the car with either of them standing on opposite sides.

"Aria, she's nervous. Give her time to adjust." she advised like it was common sense,

Only to watch as Arianna rolled her eyes with a scoff that didn't seem necessary.

"Vidia's the one who kept insisting she wanted to come along, so I don't get why she's pulling this shit now. She should just get her ass out of the car rather than waste our time." her annoyance was unmistakable as she stepped to give herself another look on the side mirror.

Throwing a flat look, Gail ignored her and instead moved around the car as she approached the side where Vidia was. With her nail, she tapped on the window and waited a few seconds before the young girl cautiously moved to roll it down.

Gail stretched a smile that was anything but fake on her peach coloured lips. Allowing her brown eyes to soften to something kind, despite the layer of makeup that sharpened her features and made her look all the more untouchable.

No, it wasn't just the makeup. Everything about her screamed that she lived to watch people try to lick her boots only for her to kick them away.

"Vee, don't be nervous. New people come here every day. Who knows, maybe you'll even meet someone who's also new, and you could be friends?" she said in a much lighter tone, adding a warmer smile that came infectious as Vidia found herself weakly reflecting it, but Arianna wasn't entertaining any of that as she whipped her head around like she was aiming to snap her own neck.

Her brows furrowed in deep as she gaped in total disbelief.

"She's Freakin' sixteen! Why are you treating her like she's a four year old?

Vidia should know to cut the crap and get out of the Damn car," she said again, and this time, she hasted her heels around the car as if aiming to drag her younger sister out and into the club regardless of the dozens of people who'd play witness to the act.

Seeing this, Gail quickly shut the door she'd pulled a mere moment ago, and turned to block Arianna's path.

Her brows dipped deep as she stared weirdly at her.

"The hell's wrong with you?"

Arianna stopped just in front of her. Her expression shifting yet again,

"Abigail, Vidia is my sister. I know how to deal with her." she spoke as she tried to move around her, but Gail blocked her path once again by stepping to the side. Irking the latter.

"Yeah, I get that I don't have siblings and will never know how to deal with one the way you see it, but she's human, I believe I know exactly how to deal with her. Plus, your way isn't even working. You're scaring her." she scolded, causing Arianna to release an exasperated sigh that was paired with a deep roll of her smokey eyes.

"She's not a chil -" "Yea, I know -"

"Then stop treating her like one." she spoke before she shifted her gaze past Gail and landed it on Vidia, who'd turned mute and had chosen to simply stare at her so-called sister.

But the moment she saw her looking at her, she lowered her gaze to the short skirt she'd thought would only be suitable for an occasion such as tonight's.

Too short.. She thought,

"Vidia, you are not going to make me lose my title by starting your bullsh- " "Oh, so your title's more important than your sister's discomfort?" Gail remarked with a single raised brow. Her arms held crossed over her chest as she fought for what she believed was right.

"Fine then.." Arianna huffed. "You deal with her," she added as she threw the towel in, but still gave herself the time to look at Vidia one more time, "And you!" Vidia flinched and recoiled from the window as if it'd suddenly burned her, while Arianna moved as close as Gail allowed.

"Stick with my dear friend here the entire night. I told you not to come here, so don't even think to look my way when you want to call it a night before three a.m."

Despite the nasty snarl that left her older sister's lips, Vidia parted her own, "B- but dad said we should... -"

Arianna drew back without bothering to hear the start of it as she turned on her heels. Her shoes clicking loudly against the pavement as she placed her whole attention towards Reane, who'd stepped out of the car just to silently stand leaning against it.

Having been busy on her phone as she didn't bother to give a care about what was happening with the people she'd arrived with.

"Rea, let's go." Arianna called.

Reane tapped on the screen of her phone a few more times before she finally allowed her attention to stray as she raised her eyes and stared at the white-haired girl, before her gaze moved to the brunette standing there with a displeased frown formed between her brows.

"You done?" She asked bluntly, where Arianna grabbed her by her arm and pulled her ass off the car.

"Yea, don't worry. Let's go. We're already late." Arianna said as they walked off. Both headed for the entrance of the club, where Reane slid her phone in her bag while following along.

Gail, on the other hand, could only sigh like a tired old woman as she stared at their retreating figures. She only turned to look when she heard the familiar thud of a door closing behind her.

Surprise masked her face when she found Vidia standing on the pavement,

Where the cool night breeze took the chance to taunt her as it briefly lifted her skirt, causing her to slap it back to place with a sharp breath.

"You're going inside?"

Vidia dropped her eyes. Shrugging silently when a distant whistle caused her eyes to flick to her side. Her cheeks burning a furious shade of red.

Honestly, she nolonger wanted to. The treatment Arianna gave her murdered whatever demon had possessed and made her want to come here, but seeing Gail stand up for her like that made a bloom of want sprout from somewhere in her chest.

Only so she didn't let her fighting for her go for nothing,

And as if proving her choice farther correct, as soon as the suggestive whistle had stopped, Gail's voice followed suit. Loud, fierce,

Fearless..

"Hey! Fuck off you dick head!"

She growled. Glaring away at the unfortunate soul before she turned to look at Vidia again. Her expression shifting as though the flame breathing dragon from two seconds ago was anyone else but her.

Vidia blinked. Stunned.

It wasn't like she didn't know the brunette, but truthfully speaking, she actually didn't. Arianna never invited any of her friends over to the house for tea and hanging out as such. Not even by mistake.

And with that, Vidia had only ever seen these friends of hers when she peeked at them from her bedroom window whenever they came to pick her up for such nights.

And it seemed like tonight she was going to unravel the whole package. Not just catching each other's eyes from afar, not just waving friendly gestures at a distance, not just seeing the cars drive off.

She was about to learn who this particular friend of her sister's actually was, and instead of unsettling her as the idea of meeting new people usually did, this one instead shot a tingle of thrill from her bones like no other.

"Hmm, what a sister you have." Gail added as she turned to look at the two who were now going inside the large building as they'd just passed by the two bouncers stationed on either side of the entrance.

A vehicle that slowly came to a halt a little beyond the side of the building managed to draw Gail's attention. Nurturing a look of disdain in her eyes as she stared at it a second too long than she would've originally liked.

Out of habit, her thumb moved to rub over her index finger in a mirror of minor agitation.

Vidia's little laugh at Gail's former remark managed to erase the glare her eyes were slowly bringing to life. Grounding her back in the moment.

Pushing everything aside, Gail formed a smile on her peach lips as she took to claim Vidia's hand in her own, "You wanted in on the fun, right? so let's go. I'll be your sister for the night." she said and almost instantly began pulling her along without giving her much of a chance to claim otherwise.

Vidia didn't seem to mind as her steps echoed right beside her.

A little hesitant and more observant, but she was moving on as she tried to match Gail's confident steps while they finally made their way towards the entrance of the building.
