Chapter 1: You Know What To Do
Maddy’s (P.O.V)
The room was crowded and I felt like I was going to puke so I got up from the floor and went to the bathroom.
Once I made it to the bathroom I closed the door behind me and ran over to the toilet where I started puking my guts out.
I was in the middle of throwing up when I heard the door open.
A girl with dirty blonde hair and clothes that barely fit her walked in. She walked over to me and held my shoulder length curly hair back for me.
“Oh Maddy, did you take too much substances this time?”
I finally stopped puking to talk to her.
“No, it’s something else.” I said, wiping my mouth with the back of my hands.
“What’s wrong?”
I moved to sit with my back against the bathroom wall.
“It’s Adam. He wants to get back together.”
A shocked look came over Casey’s face but it went away quicker than it came.
“So what does that mean?” She paused. “I thought you were going to stunt on him and show him how well you were doing without him.”
“I’ve been in contact with a girl I used to go to school with and she has been the messenger between Adam and I for awhile now.”
This caught her attention.
“Wait, what? Does this person know where you are or even who you are now? Does Adam know?”
“No, no of course not.”
“Back up a bit. How do you know Adam wants to get back together and that this friend isn’t lying?”
“I trust her. She showed me the screenshots between her Adam. She wouldn’t lie to me about him. She has no reason to.”
“Can I see the screenshots this person sent you?”
“Sure,” I said, grabbing my phone out of my pockets and pulling up the screenshots before handing it to her.
She looked through my texts with a disapproving look on her face.
“I want to hold hold her in my arms.” Casey read something Adam wrote from the screenshots.
Her eyebrow lifted up. “I love her a lot.” She read over another text from Adam.
“See what I mean? You can read more if you want.” I said.
She put up her hand. “I’ve read enough.” She said through gritted teeth.
She seemed upset, but I didn’t know why.
“It’s the burner phone you guys gave me after I joined Spot Eye so no one will be able to trace us.” I said thinking that was the problem.
“You’re leaving the gang today because you said your parents are looking for you, and Cole decided to let you go because we couldn’t have you in the gang when the police were actively looking for you, right?”
“Yes,” I said trying to see where this was going.
“Okay, I’ll be right back.” She left the bathroom without another word.
I was about to get up and follow her but my stomach wasn’t having it. I started throwing up again.
I was in the middle of still puking my guts out when the door opened again.
“Are you sure you want to go back to this guy after he’s caused you so much heartache? I mean you ran away and joined us because of this guy.”
“I mean it was mostly because of my home life but yeah he didn’t help either.”
“I’m just worried about you.” There was a look of concern on her face but for the first time since I’ve known her it didn’t seem genuine.
“Thank you, but there’s no need to worry.”
She rolled her eyes. Now she wasn’t even trying to hide that she was pissed off. “Anyway, Cole wants to see you.”
Cole was the leader of Spot Eye. If he ever wanted to see you without talking to him about it before hand you knew it couldn’t be a good thing.
“What does Cole want with me?”
“I don’t know. Come on we don’t want to keep him waiting.” Casey said seeming all cheerful now as she grabbed my hands and helped me up from the floor.
We walked out of the bathroom and as we made our way through the abandoned house filled with kids my age who were stoned out of their minds I realized just how crazy these past months have been for everyone.
We came to a stop in a room where Cole was making out with a bunch of girls. He dismissed them as soon as he saw Casey and I standing in the doorway.
One of the girls bumped into me and gave me a dirty look on her way out.
“Maddy, my favorite run away.” Cole said mentioning for me to walk further in the room with his hand.
“What’s going on?” I asked cutting straight to the point.
“Nothing, should there be something going on? Is there anything you want to tell me?”
“No?” I said.
“You’re leaving today. How do you feel?”
“Um, I don’t know.”
“You don’t know? When you joined us I told you the only way out was death, and now you’re leaving us with all of our secrets alive, and you’re telling me you don’t know how you feel?”
“Grateful I guess.”
He nodded his head as he lit up a cigarette and but it in between his mouth.
“Pack your bags. You’re leaving right now.”
That took me by surprise.
“I thought we decided on later tonight? You said it would be easier because it’d be dark so the chances of anyone following you guys back would be slim.”
“Timothy will accompany you on the bus ride back to your city until you get home safely. It was nice knowing you Madison.”
I looked to Casey then back at Cole.
“What are you waiting for you? I said you can leave.” He barked at me.
I quickly left the room, but the strange thing was that Casey didn’t follow me.
Casey’s P.O.V
“You were right. She didn’t even mention it to me.” Cole waited until Maddy left before he spoke.
“It’s clear that she doesn’t want to be part of the gang because of that boy. The whole thing about her parents looking for her was a lie. No one was with her when she supposedly saw her own missing poster. We just believed her without a thought.”
“We believed her because when she joined she took an oath not to lie.”
“What if she’s working with the police and they used her supposed sob story about her home life and that Adam guy to get her in the gang? Notice how she refused to kill anyone while she was with us? My guess was that she was undercover.”
“Okay, let’s think this through because we’re getting into conspiracy territory now.” Cole said.
I admit that I was always the most paranoid out of everyone else in Spot Eye, but something was definitely off about this situation.
“What are we going to do?” I asked.
“I don’t know. We’ve never killed one of our own before because no one’s wanted to leave before and no one’s managed to leave.”
There was a moment of silence between us.
“But it’s clear that she left or wanted nothing to do with us because of this guy. She clearly is thinking about going back to this Adam guy or she wouldn’t be torn about it and throwing up in the bathroom over it.”
“Then it’s not her we need to go after. If she played us then we need to hit her where it hurts the most. You know what to do.”
I nodded my head as I left the room and started making plans in my head.
