In the quiet hum of the 6th-grade morning assembly, the world felt vast and intimidating. Haruka stood near the back, a silent observer with her eyes fixed on the headmaster. But across the aisle, Ren was far from silent. He was the boy who couldn't sit still, his gaze constantly drifting away from the stage to find Haruka. Even then, his eyes were bright with a mischief that she found exhausting.

As the years passed into 8th grade, Ren’s antics only grew louder. During lunch breaks, he would leap onto tables or lead his friends in boisterous games, always checking to see if Haruka was watching. He was overconfident, walking with a swagger that suggested he owned the hallways. Haruka simply turned the pages of her book, shielding herself from his noise. To her, he was just a boy who sought attention he hadn't earned.

By 9th grade, Ren decided to conquer the stage. During the annual talent festival, he performed a high-energy dance routine followed by a soulful song. The crowd roared, and he took his bow with a flourish, his eyes immediately darting to where Haruka sat in the third row. He expected a smile, perhaps a clap, but Haruka kept her hands in her lap. She saw his talent, but his arrogance blinded her to his heart.

Ren wasn't just a performer; he was a scholar who wanted to be the best. In their 10th-grade remedial math sessions—which he attended just to be near her—he would solve complex equations at lightning speed. He would slide his perfect test scores across the desk toward her, a silent boast. Haruka would only sigh, focus on her own work, and wonder why he felt the need to prove himself so loudly.

The shift happened on a rainy afternoon in 11th grade. Haruka had stayed late in the library and found herself stranded at the school entrance without an umbrella. As she stepped into the downpour, she slipped on the slick stone steps. Suddenly, the rain stopped hitting her. Ren was there, his usual cocky grin replaced by a look of genuine concern. He held his umbrella over her, helping her up without a single boastful word.

For the first time, Haruka saw the boy behind the bravado. During the evening assemblies of their penultimate year, she found her own eyes wandering. On the final day before graduation, the campus was a whirlwind of packing and goodbyes. Ren found Haruka by the old cherry blossom tree behind the dorms. Without a word, he reached into his bag and pulled out a worn, blue diary. "Trade with me?" he asked, his voice uncharacteristically soft. Haruka hesitated, then reached into her own bag and handed him her simple, leather-bound journal.

That night, back in her childhood bedroom, Haruka opened Ren's diary. She expected jokes or drawings of his achievements. Instead, she found years of entries dedicated to her. He wrote about the way she tucked her hair behind her ear in 6th grade, how her silence challenged him to be better, and how his overconfidence was merely a mask for his fear that he wasn't good enough for her.
