Prologue
“Good evening, I’m Chloe Vance, and we are coming to you tonight with breaking news that has sent shockwaves across the European continent. The polls have just closed in the small but strategically vital Black Sea archipelago nation of Veridia, and the results are in: Servius Langdon has been elected as the nation’s new president in a stunning upset that will reshape the country’s political landscape for generations to come.”
The camera tightens on Vance’s perfectly composed features, the Langdon News Network logo gleaming softly over her shoulder. Behind her, the Veridian parliament building glows against the night sky, fireworks beginning to erupt in the distance.
“Langdon, the billionaire scion of the international Langdon dynasty and relative newcomer to Veridian politics, has secured 52.3% of the vote in a runoff election that saw record turnout across the country’s 38 million-strong population. His victory breaks the century-old stranglehold of the three ruling families who have dominated Veridian politics since the fall of the monarchy after World War II.”
Vance pauses as a graphic appears beside her head, showing the three family crests of the Ashworths, Volkovs, and Al-Jamils crumbling into dust.
“The election marks a dramatic shift in Veridia’s complex ethnic and political balance. For those unfamiliar with this unique nation, Veridia has long been governed by a triumvirate of powerful families: the British-descended Ashworths, who control the Conservative Heritage Party and the nation’s financial sector; the native Veridian Volkovs, who lead the Progressive Alliance Party and dominate manufacturing; and the Arab-origin Al-Jamils, who represent the country’s diverse minority populations through the People’s Unity Coalition.”
The screen cuts to grainy footage of Servius Langdon casting his ballot earlier today, his hand steadied by his wife, Keavna Bishop-Langdon, whose presence as a Black American woman has itself become a symbol of Langdon’s unconventional campaign.
“What makes this victory particularly remarkable is how Langdon managed to build a coalition that transcended Veridia’s traditional ethnic divisions,” Vance continues, her voice now carrying the weight of historical significance. “Despite his own background as a wealthy white American of British descent, Langdon successfully courted the minority vote that comprises nearly 40% of Veridia’s population, including the significant Yoruba, Indian, and Arab communities.”
The broadcast shifts to images of celebrating crowds in Veridia’s capital, with people of diverse ethnicities waving Langdon campaign signs alongside traditional Veridian flags.
“Political analysts are still processing how Langdon achieved what many thought impossible: breaking the three-family rotation that has governed Veridia since the 1950s. His campaign, which reportedly spent an unprecedented 2 billion euros, bypassed traditional media channels controlled by the established families, instead using targeted social media campaigns and direct messaging to reach younger voters and minority communities.”
Vance’s expression turns more serious as she addresses the controversy surrounding the election.
“The campaign was not without its challenges, however. Langdon faced accusations of vote buying in economically depressed regions, cyberattacks on opposition party infrastructure, and a last-minute scandal involving offshore accounts belonging to the Ashworth family. His victory speech, delivered just moments ago, attempted to bridge these divisions.”
The screen cuts to Langdon at a podium, his voice resonating through the square: “Tonight, we begin a new chapter in Veridia’s long history. A chapter where native Veridians will once again become the majority in their own homeland, but not through exclusion or discrimination. A chapter where our minority communities will flourish and contribute to our shared prosperity. A chapter where we move beyond the old divisions that have held us back for too long.”
“Langdon’s platform of increasing the native Veridian population while simultaneously supporting minority growth and discouraging British migration represents a delicate balancing act in a nation with such a complex demographic history,” Vance explains as the camera returns to the studio. “His stated goal of returning the native Veridian population to 60% will require significant policy changes in a country where they currently comprise just 45% of the population.”
The broadcast shows a demographic breakdown of Veridia’s 38 million people: native Veridians at 45%, white British at 20%, Yoruba at 12%, Arab at 10%, Indian at 8%, and other mixed ethnicities at 5%.
“What remains unclear is how Langdon plans to achieve these demographic goals, and what his true motivations might be. Some observers suggest there may be ulterior motives behind his seemingly balanced approach to population engineering.”
Vance leans forward slightly, her tone becoming more conspiratorial.
“Sources within the Langdon campaign have hinted at a long-term strategy that goes beyond simple demographic adjustment. There are whispers of a bold new vision for Veridia’s future—one that could fundamentally alter not just who lives in this Black Sea nation, but what it means to be Veridian at all.”
The camera pans out to show a map of Veridia, its islands strategically positioned between Turkey and Ukraine, with land connections to Russia and Bulgaria.
“For now, the international community watches with cautious interest as this wealthy outsider prepares to take the helm of a nation with a history as complex and troubled as its ethnic makeup. From its founding in the 16th century by King Geralforr Veridia, through the dark days of World War II when the last king, Ashcynth, allied with the Nazis and participated in the genocide of 3.6 million Jewish Veridians, to the post-war era of British influence and the eventual rise of minority political power—Veridia has always been a nation at the crossroads of civilizations.”
Vance’s voice grows more animated as she approaches her conclusion.
“Servius Langdon’s victory represents yet another dramatic turn in this ongoing story of demographic engineering and political transformation. Whether his presidency will lead to greater harmony or deeper divisions remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the old order in Veridia has been shattered, and something new is emerging from its ruins.”
The broadcast cuts to live footage of Langdon and his wife walking through the celebrating crowd, their security team struggling to keep pace as people reach out to touch them.
“As Langdon himself said in his victory speech tonight, ‘The tides of history are turning, and Veridia stands ready to sail into a new dawn.’ For the 38 million people of this complex and fascinating nation, that dawn has now arrived. Whether it brings the light of prosperity or the shadows of uncertainty, only time will tell.”
Vance turns directly to the camera, her expression a mixture of journalistic curiosity and barely concealed excitement.
“This is Chloe Vance reporting from the Langdon News Network. We will continue to follow this developing story as Servius Langdon prepares to take office and begin implementing his vision for Veridia’s future. Stay with us.”
