Prologue

JULIA

Feeling a little nervous, I glanced at my watch. Where on earth was he? It wasn’t like him to be late. A sense of unease crept over me. Suddenly, the doorbell rang. I jumped, as I hadn’t expected it. Strange. Had Lukas forgotten his key? That wasn’t like him at all. I quickly went to the door and opened it, hoping to find my fiancé. But the next moment, I saw a police officer and our friends, Alex and Sarah, standing at the door. Shocked and completely bewildered, I stared at the police officer. “Hey, sweetie, can we come in?” Sarah asked, already gently pushing me aside and stepping inside, followed by the men. Somewhat dazed, I slowly trailed behind them. “Ms. Martin?” the police officer asked, turning to face me. “Yes?” I replied, still uneasy and with a certain sense of foreboding. “You’re Mr. Weber’s fiancée, or so I’ve been told. Is that correct?” “That’s right. I don’t quite understand—what’s this about, please?” I asked, though at the same time I wanted nothing more than to cover my ears so I wouldn’t have to hear the next words. A police officer never meant anything good when you’d already been waiting for your partner for about 90 minutes. “Well, I’m afraid I have bad news for you. Mr. Lukas Weber took his own life a few hours ago,” the police officer explained.
