It had been more than a couple of months since I’d last seen him. The last time he was here, he created quite a scene, insulted my mother and threatened to raise the whole coven to the ground. It was quite eventful and entertaining for me, especially when he clashed with my mother.
So in that sense, I’d missed him but not that way, okay? The coven got quieter without any looming hints of his presence here. He kept things interesting here. He was mad enough to threaten the Weddards of all. So yes, I had genuine reasons to miss him.
And maybe also because he was my mate, but that wasn’t important. It was just an inconvenience. That was all. It wasn’t that serious.
I stopped outside the library and schooled my features before stepping inside. I didn’t see him immediately, but I knew where to find him. He had a spot. He liked to linger at the very back of the library, seething behind the shelves of books while he waited for me each time.
I went to the very back of the library but didn’t reveal myself right away. I hid behind a bookshelf and studied him, ignoring the flutter in my stomach.
He was angrily flipping through a book before tossing it away out of frustration and fisting his hair. His hair looked more silver than the last time he’d been here, and I wondered if it had anything to do with his curse.
I continued to watch him as he sprang to his feet, rising to his towering height and started pacing around. His muscle-packed body looked tense, especially his sharp shoulders. There were dark circles under his eyes, and he seemed to have gotten leaner since the last time. He looked more restless than ever.
For a moment, it almost made me feel bad for him, but I reminded myself who he was.
He was the Mad Alpha of the Snow Court.
Rikkard Darkborne.
He’d killed his mad father to take over the Court, and now he ran that place like a madman, leading his own mad army. He was up to no good, and he wasn’t known for any good.
And he was also my mate. Basically, I was doomed, but I wasn’t going to give in. Not so easily.
I watched him pace like a caged wild animal, going through all the excuses I could bullshit him with. He’d want to know why the last spell I’d given him didn’t work. They were never supposed to work. I was leading him on, sending him in circles. It was fun. I enjoyed bullshiting him, but I had a feeling that this wouldn’t work for long.
I seemed to have been briefly distracted by my thoughts when Alpha Rikkard noticed my presence behind the bookshelf. His piercing silver eyes locked with mine through the gap in the bookshelf above the books.
“You,” He growled. His deep, powerful voice made my stomach flutter as he demanded, “Come here,”
