The Promise
Older people often believe that children are angels, and that up to a certain age, they are capable of loving purely and unconditionally. But is that really true?
Well… why not believe it? After all, if werewolves exist, if fox spirits can live inside humans, if there are chimeras and so many other supernatural creatures—then why is it so hard for us to believe in beings that love unconditionally?
Maybe it’s because love has been lost somewhere along the way, buried beneath the practicality life has forced upon us. Everything feels so complex and, at the same time, so simple. Today, computers replace meetings, phones replace face-to-face conversations. In school hallways, when we bump into someone, we don’t even bother to look at who it was—we’re too busy sending messages through the countless apps technology throws at us every single day. And honestly… I don’t know how good that really is.
Still, I like to believe that children love in a pure and unconditional way. That they truly are pure. That they still have something we adults have lost—the ability to be honest and sincere with our feelings. So why not believe that children really are angels?
I don’t know… maybe people believe in demons, but not in angels.
But there is one thing I can tell you: when a child makes a promise, that promise will be kept.
And it’s with a promise that I begin to tell the story of Scott McCall and Stiles Stilinski—two friends who have been together for as long as they can remember, who have gone through things most people wouldn’t even believe could happen to two ordinary teenagers. Not the most popular ones, but with lives that would be completely changed after one of them is bitten by an Alpha wolf.
But the story I’m about to tell doesn’t begin there.
It begins long before all of that… with a promise.
Stiles was sitting alone in the far corner of his backyard, completely shattered.
Tell me—how is a six-year-old supposed to deal with the loss of his mother? Someone taken away so suddenly, so unfairly?
He couldn’t. Not really.
Not with all those people looking at him with pity in their eyes. That’s why he had come out here, isolating himself. He didn’t even want his father’s company right now.
Even at such a young age, he was trying to understand why life could be so unfair.
Poor kid.
A few steps away, watching him from a distance, stood his best friend, Scott McCall. As far back as he could remember, Stiles had always been there. Scott couldn’t even begin to understand the pain his friend was going through.
Slowly, he walked closer… until he sat down beside him.
Just like Stiles, he stared off into nothing, into the same empty space the smaller boy had been looking at.
Stiles noticed him, but stayed silent for a while.
Then, finally, he spoke.
“Don’t tell me you feel sorry for me too, Scott…” Stiles asked, his voice slightly shaky.
“No,” Scott replied.
That made Stiles turn and look at him.
“I don’t feel sorry for you, Stiles. I’m just here. And I always will be. That’s how it’s supposed to be.”
Silence settled between them again.
Minutes passed.
Neither of them said anything—just sitting side by side on the grass.
Until Stiles broke the silence.
“Do you promise, Scott?” he asked, still staring ahead, his eyes filled with tears.
“Promise what?” Scott asked, confused.
“That you’ll always stay by my side…” Stiles scratched his head nervously. “That you’ll never leave me… and always be here?”
Scott smiled.
“Yeah, Stiles. You’re my best friend. As long as I’m alive, I’ll always be here for you.”
Stiles turned to him and said softly:
“I heard my dad telling my mom that he really liked her… and that it was love. So, Scott… I really like you too. I love you… just like my dad loved my mom.”
Scott smiled again.
He stood up, pulling his best friend up with him, and wrapped him in a tight hug.
“I love you too, Stiles. And I promise I’ll always be here for you. I won’t ever let anything—or anyone—come between us and our friendship.”
For a moment, in that embrace, Stiles allowed himself to forget the terrible day he had just lived through.
For a moment… he allowed himself to smile.
From a distance, Sheriff Stilinski and Melissa watched the two boys.
And they smiled.
Because they knew that, right there, something rare was being born—
the purest, most genuine, and unbreakable kind of love in the world.
And so… that day came to an end.
