Chapter 1
SCENE 1 [INT. LIAM'S APARTMENT - EVENING]
The door swings open. MAYA bursts in, breathless. She's still wearing the same coat from three nights ago-the night of the "Big Blowout."
LIAM is sitting on the sofa, scrolling through a tablet. He doesn't look up.
MAYA (Voice trembling) Liam. I didn't mean it.
Liam taps the screen, swipes right, then looks up. His expression is as neutral as a blank Word document.
LIAM Didn't mean what, Maya? You're going to have to be specific. We've had a lot of "meanings" lately.
MAYA
A Tuesday night! The breakup. I was angry, and I was tired, and the words just... they just came out. I didn't actually want you to leave. I thought you'd fight for me.
LIAM (A small, dry smile) Ah. The "test." I failed, then? Because I listened to exactly what you said and respected your boundaries?
MAYA It wasn't a test! It was a mistake. I've been a wreck for forty-eight hours, Liam. I haven't slept. I haven't eaten. I've just been waiting for you to call and tell me I'm being dramatic.
LIAM (Setting the tablet down) I thought about calling. But then I realized the silence was actually quite nice.
Maya flinches as if he'd slapped her. She moves closer, reaching for his hand, but he shifts to pick up a coffee mug.
MAYA You're hurting. I get it. You're acting like this because you're mad. Just yell at me. Tell me I'm an idiot.
LIAM I'm not mad, Maya. That's the thing. When you said it was over, I felt this... click. Like a gear finally shifting into place. I packed my stuff, I came home, and I realized I don't have to guess what "I hate you" means anymore.
MAYA I love you! I said I love you a thousand times before I said that one stupid thing!
LIAM (Quietly) The "one stupid thing" was the exit sign. And I took the exit.
MAYA (Crying now) So that's it? Three years? You're just... done? Because of one bad Tuesday?
LIAM (Checks his watch) I have a Thai food delivery coming in ten minutes. I only ordered for one.
MAYA Liam, look at me! Look at me and tell me you don't care that I'm standing here breaking apart.
Liam finally looks at her. His eyes aren't cold; they're just empty. There's no fire, no resentment, just the exhausted peace of someone who has finished a long race.
LIAM I care that you're upset, in a general human sense. But I'm not the person who fixes it anymore. You fired that person, remember?
MAYA I'm rehiring him! Please.
LIAM The position's been closed, Maya.
A buzzer sounds. The intercom.
LIAM (Into the intercom) Send him up.
He turns back to Maya, gesturing toward the door with a polite, distant tilt of his head.
LIAM You should probably go. The hallway gets awkward when the delivery guys are trying to pass.
MAYA You're terrifying like this.
LIAM No. I'm just finished.
Maya stares at him, waiting for the crack in the mask, for the "Gotcha," for the hug. It doesn't come. She slowly turns and walks toward the door. She stops at the threshold, looking back.
MAYA I'll call you tomorrow. When you're feeling more like yourself.
LIAM (Picking up his tablet again) I'm feeling exactly like myself, Maya. That's the part you're missing. Have a good night.
Maya exits. The door clicks shut. Liam doesn't look at the door. He doesn't sigh. He just starts scrolling again.
[FADE OUT.]
