Summary

A mission to investigate a strange phenomenon in space, upon which its commander recalls how he has gotten to this point, and determines where humanity should go from here. When a mysterious bright light appears in the Solar System, the space organisations of Earth send a representative team in a prototype spacecraft to investigate. Led by Colonel David Carter, they must undertake a two-year journey, past the orbit of Mars and towards Jupiter. During this immense journey, Carter reflects on his life leading up to this great mission, With experts back on Earth theorising the light to be evidence of a tear in space-time, he obsesses over this target and what their journey to the abyss might mean. Around him, his crew begin to disappear. Back on Earth, contact with the spacecraft is lost. And eventually, only Carter remains to dictate how the mission should really end.

Epigraph

’Eterne God, that thurgh thy purveiance

Ledest the world by certeyn governance,

In ydel, as men seyn, ye nothyng make.

But, Lord, thise grisly feendly rokkes blake,

That semen rather a foul confusioun

Of werk than any fair creacioun

Of swich a parfit wys God and a stable,

Why han ye wroght this werk unresonable?

For by this werk, south, north, ne west, ne eest,

Ther nys yfostred man, ne byrd, ne beest;

It dooth no good, to my wit, but anoyeth.

Se ye nat, Lord, how mankynde it destroyeth?’

-Dorigen, ’The Franklin’s Tale,’ ’The Canterbury Tales,’ Lines 865-876

‘I had no say in the matter. Every moment in your life is a turning and every one a choosing. Somewhere you made a choice. All followed to this. The accounting is scrupulous. The shape is drawn. No line can be erased. I had no belief in your ability to move a coin to your bidding. How could you? A person’s path through the world seldom changes and even more seldom will it change abruptly. And the shape of your path was visible from the beginning.’

-Anton Chigurh, ’No Country For Old Men’
