Chapter 1
The last day of Grade 9 in the 2019/2020 school year in the UAE was very different from a normal school year because of COVID-19 and the shift to distance learning through Microsoft Teams.
Grade 9/D starts joining the Microsoft Teams meeting one by one. The screen fills with names as students log in, some early, some just on time. The chat is still quiet for a moment.
Then Mr Khaled, the English teacher, opens the session Good morning everyone,” he says calmly, as he begins checking attendance He calls out names slowly: Hamad?” Present, sir,” Hamad replies. Abdulrahman?” Yes sir,” Abdulrahman answers. Then he continues down the list. Abdulla?” There’s a short pause… then Abdulla joins properly and responds. Yes sir.”Mr Khaled said warmly: “I am so happy that you are here.”Mr Khaled glances at the attendance list again. Mansour?” Yes sir, present,” Mansour replies. Naser?” Present sir,” Naser answers. The teacher marks them down and continues calmly, keeping the lesson moving.
Then during the English lesson, Mr Khaled starts a small conversation with the class. The atmosphere is calm and friendly since it’s the last day of Grade 9. He looks at Hamad and asks: So Hamad… what are you going to do in the holiday?” Hamad replies that he will just stay in the UAE and not travel anywhere because of COVID-19. Mr Khaled the English teacher nods and responds in a serious but caring voice: Yes, you have to stay safe and wear a mask.”
Obviously Mr Khaled continues the conversation in the English class He looks at Abdulrahman and asks So Abdulrahman, what about you? It’s last day of grade 9 Are you traveling for the holiday or staying in the UAE? Abdulrahman replies honestly “I can’t travel because there is COVID, and I am staying in the UAE.” The teacher nods and responds in a calm, supportive tone Good. More importantly, you have to stay safe.”
Then Mr Khaled said Abdulla it’s last day of grade 9 and Abdulla during the English lesson He asks in a friendly tone Abdulla, what is your favorite game and hobby?” Abdulla replies: My favorite games are Roblox and Minecraft… and I like eating outside.” The teacher smiles a little and continues the conversation: Will you travel during the holiday or stay here?”cAbdulla answers honestly: “I will stay here because of COVID.” Mr Khaled nods and responds: You have to be careful and stay safe.”
Meanwhile, Hamad has already finished answering earlier and Abdulrahman has also completed his turn.
Then it’s Mansour’s turn Mr Khaled looks at him and says: Mansour, it’s the last day of Grade 9. What will you do in the vacation?”
Mansour answers: I will listen to music and then play something. The teacher nods and continues Will you travel or stay here? Mansour replies: No, I can’t travel because of COVID-19. Mr Khaled responds in a calm and caring tone: You have to stay safe.”
the students will move up to Grade 10 in the new academic year starting in September.
Mr Khaled looks at the class one last time during the English period and says:
“Think about your plan for the future… not just Grade 10, but after you graduate from university. What will you do when you finish your studies and start working?”One day you will finish school, then university, and then you will work. You must plan your future step by step.”
At 9:35 AM, the English lesson comes to an end Mr Khaled Lasshen looks at the class one final time on Microsoft Teams and says a calm goodbye after the last discussion It’s the end of first period English for Grade 9/D.
just a few minutes after English ends, Grade 9/D prepares for the next lesson It’s time for Math class Students quickly stay in Microsoft Teams or join the next meeting link.
At 9:40 AM, Math class begins on Microsoft Teams The teacher, Mr Mohammed Nashat, joins the meeting and greets Grade 9/D Good morning everyone. The students respond and get ready for the lesson Since it’s the last day of Grade 9, the lesson is not very heavy. Mr Mohammed Nashat starts guiding them through simple revision and practice. He explains step by step and tells students to follow along and try solving questions.At 10:15 AM, the Math lesson comes to an end.
Mr Mohammed Nashat finishes the final explanations and gives the class a closing message after the revision work. it feels like a thank you to Mr Mohammed Nashat the math tefor teaching them throughout the year and helping them reach the end of Grade 9.
At 10:20 AM, Grade 9/D had Science class Students joined Microsoft Teams and prepared for the lesson as the teacher started shortly after everyone arrived At the start of the Science class, the teacher opened his phone to take attendance He checked the list of students in Grade 9/D and marked who was present or absent as they joined Microsoft Teams.
Later during the Science lesson, the teacher gave the students some quizzes to complete Grade 9/D opened the quiz link and started answering questions based on the topic they had studied.
Students worked individually on their laptops during the Science quiz.Each student focused on their own screen, reading the questions carefully and selecting answers one by one Later at 10:55 AM, the General Science lesson was finished The teacher reviewed the last part of the quiz and reminded students to submit any remaining answers. After that, the class was dismissed.
After the Science class ended at 10:55AM, Grade 9/D went on break Students took a short rest from their online lessons During the break, Abdulla didn’t have time to talk with Hamad and Mansour because he was busy He stayed focused on his own work and tasks
Later, around 11:10 AM, the break was over.Grade 9/D students returned to Microsoft Teams and got ready for the next lesson. One by one, they joined the Business class.
Some students checked their LMS during the Business lesson They logged into the learning system to view tasks and materials A few checked upcoming assignments and deadlines
Others opened lesson content while the teacher was explaining In a short while, at 11:45 AM, the Business class was over The teacher finished the lesson and reminded students to check their LMS for any remaining tasks or assignments Students logged out of Microsoft Teams
Afterwards, at 11:50 AM, Grade 9/D had Islamic Education class Students joined Microsoft Teams and waited for the teacher to begin the lesson The Islamic teacher joins the Microsoft Teams meeting with Grade 9/D.
Soon during the Islamic lesson, the teacher starts checking the Alef platform lesson with Grade 9/D He asks the students to open their Alef accounts and make sure their progress is completed. Some students quickly log in, while others respond in the chat that they are already done or still working on it He checks a few students’ progress and encourages them to finish any missing activities before the end of the term.
At 12:20 PM, the Islamic lesson (fifth period) comes to an end The teacher finishes the final reminders and checks, then tells the class it’s time to close the session Okay everyone, that’s all for today. Take care Students start to settle and prepare to leave the Microsoft Teams meeting one by one. At the end of the school year, Ali Humaid was no longer part of Grade 9 on Microsoft Teams or Abu Dhabi secondary school.
At 12:25 PM, the Islamic Education lesson officially ends.Farewell 9/D At the end of the school day, after all the lessons have finished, Grade 9/D begins to say goodbye.
