Summary

He was sent to dismantle a nation. He didn't expect a math teacher to dismantle his heart. In the biting winter of 1976, Mike Volkov arrives at a quiet Colorado school as the new PE teacher. To the world, he is a charming man with a faint accent. To Moscow, he is a ghost—a Soviet spy embedded in the heart of the enemy. Then he meets Leela. She is a vision of jasmine and sarees in a land of snow and silence. What begins as a tactical cover story quickly spirals into a decades-long obsession. From secret kisses in a rusted lift to the warmth of a shared home, Mike builds a life on a foundation of lies—until a single night, a hidden transmitter, and a positive pregnancy test shatter the illusion. Forty years later, Mike is a man left with only shadows. But when he discovers Leela’s private diary, he realizes he wasn't the only one keeping secrets. Through her words, he discovers the terrifying depth of the burden she carried for him, and the silent, radical choice she made to love a man who was never supposed to exist. A haunting exploration of love, espionage, and the devastating weight of the things we leave unsaid.

The Staff Room Mirage

In the cold winter of 1976, Mike Volkov arrived at the Cantonment School in Colorado as the new Physical Education teacher. Tall, charming, and in his late twenties, he carried a carefully hidden Russian accent and a dangerous secret — he was a Soviet spy.

On his very first day, in the dusty staff room, his eyes found her.

Leela stood there in a simple formal salwar kameez, her creamy skin glowing in the afternoon light. Her black wavy hair was tied in a long braid that reached her lower back, with a few loose strands framing her face. She had big brown eyes with long lashes and a proportionate, slim figure. When she noticed him approaching, she smiled politely and extended her hand.

“Oh… you must be Mr. Mike. I’m Leela, the Math teacher.”

Mike took her hand, held it a moment longer than necessary, and brushed his thumb across her knuckles. With a slow, charming smile, he replied, “Leela… now that’s a name that suits a girl who looks like she walked straight out of a dream.”

From that instant, he was completely enchanted.

jo987_123: This is a good story, but it needs a good editor to go through this iteration and fix the mistakes. The pov changes from 1st person to 3rd person, often, and sometimes within one sentence. It needs a liberal sprinkling of punctuation marks throughout, and a decision needs to be made about the char...
