Chapter 1
I let out a long breath. Wow. Today fucking sucked. I grab a cigarette from my glove compartment, lighting it and taking a long drag.
God, I hate smoking.
I watch the smoke in the air around me, flowing out the window. Sighing, I unlock my phone. 0831.
August 31st.
Her birthday.
Pain swells in my chest and I shove it down. My eyes burn. Fill my lungs with more smoke. Forget, forget, forget, forget, forget. Bury her. Like we did 3 months ago.
“God Allie, why’d you leave?”
I slam my fist into the steering wheel.
Wipe my eyes.
Fix my eyeliner.
Mascara.
Damn, I guess I can't get rid of her.
And if I can't, I won't.
I won’t let her go.
Another drag.
My phone rings.
“Jesus fuckin christ, what do ya want now Ma? My soul?”
I glare at my phone, then reluctantly answer her call.
“Hey Ma, what's wrong?”
The familiar, cold voice comes through my truck's speakers. That’s unfortunate.
“Kass, Clover said he’s coming to get you before dinner. You need to go back to camp.”
I pinch the bridge of my nose. Another headache. Already. God damn.
“I don't want to go to camp”
“Stop being such a selfish bitch and just go. The world isn’t going to wait for you to stop moping about Alyana. Get over it already. You’re going to camp.”
I can't take this today. I end the call. Might as well accept it. I guess I'm going back to camp. Wonderful.
