Chapter 1: Awakening
Johnny woke up from the ring of his alarm clock. "Shoot, I got ten minutes" Johnny said. The year was 1969 and Johnny was going to Blackwood Camp, a summer camp, he was going to be a counselor there. Johnny began walking down the stairs of his house, halfway down the stairs he smelt eggs and bacon. His mother was in the kitchen making him breakfast, and his father was watching football on Television. "Morning, sport, you sleep well 'cause you'll need it" Johnny's Dad said. Johnny was rushing towards the bathroom to put on his clothes and brush his teeth.
Johnny quickly put on his clothes, and realized that he put his tooth brush in his bag, which was in the car. "Damn" Johnny whispered to himself. "Johnny, you gotta hurry up, you got five minutes to eat your breakfast and get into the car!" Johnny's Mom yelled. Johnny opened the door in a flash, and slammed it shut. "Boy, close the door correctly next time." Johnny's Dad spoke. "Sorry Pa, see you" Johnny's heart felt like it was beating out of his chest. He heard the door open and close, he knew it was his mother getting their station wagon's engine ready.
Johnny ate his bacon pieces and some eggs, and drank orange juice. He exited the house, and speed walked to the station wagon. His mother opened the door for him. "Thanks, Ma" Johnny was relieved. They had to be at High school by 7:00 A.M, and It was 6:30 A.M. They had to go down Jackson St and Redfield St.
Johnny noticed the Red's Hardware store, and the Troch Gas Station. The school was in sight. Johnny looked in the back seat, his brother's duffel bag. His brother died in Vietnam and he got his duffel bag.
They were now at the school, Johnny grabbed his duffel bag. "Bye, Johnny have fun" "Love you, Ma" Johnny hopped out of the car. He watched as the station wagon drove off. He walked to the bus for the counselors. At the door of the bus, Mr. Johnson was waiting for the rest of the students to arrive. "Name and age" Mr. Johnson grumbled. "Johnny Foreman, and seventeen years old" Johnny looked around. "Welcome to Blackwood Camp, and find a seat" Mr. Johnson continued to grumble. Johnny entered the bus and everybody was talking to one another. He saw his friends, Lisa, Ryan, and Jessica. Johnny sat next to Lisa. "Hey Lis," "Hey Johnny" Lisa looked out the bus window. "Are you hungry I'm pretty sure I got granola bars in my bag?" "Well I am pretty hungry, so I'll take one of those bars" Lisa finally smiled. Johnny grabbed his bag and opened it, he had four granola bars. He passed a bar to Lisa. "Hey Jess, Ryan, do you want a granola bar?" "Sure" Jess and Ryan said in unison.
The drive was steady and quiet, the bus was growing quieter as it descended into the woods.
