Monster Within
You think you can frighten me
By binding me to these shadowed chambers,
But how can you terrify a soul
That has endured a thousand days within
The bleak prison of her own mind?
There is no greater torment
Than battling the monsters that prowl
The dim corridors of your mind,
No greater agony than burning
In the relentless fire of self-hatred.
I have spent a thousand nights submerged
In filth, while you pressed me down,
Kicking, trampling, grinding me deeper.
My heart wailed and screamed in anguish,
But no ear ever heard.
So one day, I resolved to end my torment.
I raised the blade and drove it deep into the
monster's chest, and it shrieked.
To my surprise, its cries reached your ears,
And you hurled me deeper into the darkness.
You now, scream at me and call me monster and I
Laugh, for your mind still wanders in shadows too
shallow to fathom that you cannot forge an angel
out of darkness.
