CHAPTER 1 REVIEW

"CHAPTER 1 Plot Clarity & Pacing The "hook" of the story is very effective, starting with a man in a cell watching an execution creates immediate tension. However, the transition into the flashback is a bit jarring. You move from the gallows in one paragraph to a training session "a couple of years" later in the next. The pacing within the training scene is quite fast. You introduce the "double-crossing warlock" concept, a historical assassination (Pope John Paul II), and a crime family (Regio) all within a few sentences. As a reader, I felt a bit overwhelmed by the amount of world-building information being delivered while Caleb was also physically fighting. It might be clearer to let the fight finish before diving into the complex family and political history. Character Development & Relatability Caleb comes across as a classic "tough guy" who pushes himself too hard, which makes him easy to root for. His internal struggle with his injuries makes him more human and relatable. One point of confusion: Caleb mentions he is "about 16" when the training starts, but then a few sentences later, he says, "I’m Caleb Night... 21." If he is 21 in the "current" flashback but 16 at the start of the training, the timeline feels a bit tangled. I also noticed he breaks the "fourth wall" by talking to the reader about his previous book ("Prodigal Son"). While this is helpful for context, it pulled me out of the immersion of his immediate life-or-death situation in the cell. Emotional Engagement The opening scene at the gallows is the strongest emotional point. The description of the "blubbering young woman" and the "butt of their gun" creates a visceral sense of dread and injustice. It made me feel the weight of Caleb’s own 5 o'clock deadline. During the training, the emotional stakes feel lower because Caleb is in a "safe" environment with mentors, but the mention of his concern for his sisters (Kali and Selena) adds a nice layer of protective brotherly love that helps me care more about his survival. Structural Integrity There are a few inconsistencies that might confuse a reader: The Date/Age Gap: If the Pope was shot (1981), and Caleb is 21, but says he is 16 earlier in the same scene, the reader might lose track of when exactly this is happening. The Setting: You mention the "Hotel Savoia & Jolanda" and Venice, which creates a great atmosphere, but then Caleb mentions he is "living underground." It wasn't quite clear if they are in a literal basement or just "undercover." Dialogue and Action: In the training scene, the action moves from grass to a marble wall very quickly. I had a hard time picturing the physical space they were in. Strengths & Weak Areas Strengths: Your descriptive action is very strong. Phrases like "my spine screams at me" and the description of the "Browning Automatic Pistol" add a gritty, realistic edge to the fantasy elements. The "gallows pole" imagery is a fantastic way to start a book. Weak Areas: Exposition (Info-dumping). There is a lot of "telling" the reader who people are and what happened in the past book. As a reader, I would love to see these details come out naturally through conversation or observation rather than a list of facts. For example, instead of telling us he is a "double crosser of the shadows," you could show him keeping a secret from his mentors. This story has a lot of promise, and I’d be happy to share more in-depth feedback if you’re interested. You can reach me easily through the email icon on my profile."
