A Note to the Reader In actual history, Lady Jane Grey (the "Nine Days' Queen") lived in the 16th century, a tragic figure of the Tudor period who was executed in 1554 at the age of sixteen or seventeen. Saint George, the patron saint of England, is a figure of early Christian hagiography from the 3rd century, whose legendary battle with a dragon became a cornerstone of medieval chivalry hundreds of years before the Tudors ever took the throne. By bringing them together, this story explores the themes of sacrifice, the "dragons" of political corruption, and the idea that true sainthood might be found in personal love rather than cold duty. While the history books tell a much darker tale of Jane’s end and the King’s reign, this "What If" allows us to imagine a world where the hero of legend arrives just in time to save the girl whom history could not. In this version, the dragon wasn't just a beast of scales—it was the symbol of the structures that keep people trapped, and George’s greatest victory wasn't a kill, but an escape.
