Chapter 1
Have you ever wondered why all the important things in history tend to happen at night? You may think it’s because they are doing something bad and they need the cover of darkness to keep things hidden.
That in some cases this is true and in other cases, like this one, it was not. You see what happened occurred during the night, it was an eclipse moon. It is a rare occurrence that happens once in every 500 years.
This eclipse was not ordinary. It drew every human being on the planet to gaze at it in awe. These awe-struck beings did not realize what was occurring in front of their very eyes. How could they unless they knew what to look for.
One person knew and she was trembling. She knew the time has come again when the gods of old had acquired enough power to rule once more. Right at the northeast corner of the eclipse she seen the blue flick of light, that shot down to earth and disappeared. She pulled her gaze away and ran into the other room to her grandfather.
He was not the easiest to wake but he could fall asleep at a drop of a dime. She went to his bedside and shook him until she seen his eyes flutter open.
“Wha…what is it?” he said in a sleep induced voice.
“You told me to tell you when the time had come. When the blue light flew from the moon and sun to the earth.” She said in a whispered panic.
“Calm down. Do not worry. When the time comes you will be guided to your purpose. That may happen many years from now.”
“My purpose?”
He smiled and went back to sleep. She did not have the heart to wake him again, so she walked back to her room quietly. Her mom and dad worked at night, so she had to stay with her grandfather and watch over him.
She was ten but she felt like she was much older than the kids her own age. She knew things that she should not which made her the outcast in school, she felt more comfortable with the older people anyway.
Now this is happening, and she was alone dealing with it. Tears flowed from fear and anxiety. What is my purpose? She thought as she went to look out the window and seen the eclipse was over.
She went to bed and fell asleep with no one to comfort her but the night.
The elevator door opened on the twenty sixth floor, the penthouse. The architect to the building had a sense of humor.
He omitted the thirteenth floor but created the twenty sixth. It was not lost on Scarlett and it would not be missed by her employer either.
Exiting the elevator, she was greeted with a waft of dust and dim lighting. She heard someone talking off in the distance. It could only be that shifty real estate broker, Babette Slome. She was known to price high on terrible property.
The only reason they chose her was because she asked little to no questions and cared even less once the property was sold.
Scarlett did her research on who oversaw selling this property and she came up immediately with a red flag from the Better Business Bureau.
It didn’t matter to them; they had their reason why they chose this building.
“Yeah, Bill once she signs the deed, I’m out of here the place gives me chills.” Babette said to Bill, who she assumed was her partner in real state.
“Excuse me, you must be Ms. Babette Slome?” Scarlett said, grabbing her attention.
Babette looked at Scarlett showing how surprised she was that she was not alone in the room. Her smile was forced and the fear was evident with her wide eyes. She quickly schooled her features to be professional.
Scarlett knew what she had seen. She recognized the look since she received it all her life. Scarlette stood a little over six feet two inches tall with the help of her stiletto heels. Her hair was deep, deep red. The kind that you were born with and cannot get man made. Her skin color was the perfect shade of tan that the sun gave her.
What Babette did not see was her naturally white eyes with only a pupil. Contacts shielded it.
“Hello yes, Nice to meet you. Would you like the tour of the place before signing the papers?” Babette asked.
“No need the virtual tour on your page was good enough for my employers. Can I see the papers now so I can sign it.”
Babette eyebrows rose in surprise.
“They trust you that much to sign the paperwork?”
“Ms. Sloan you have five minutes to produce the paperwork before I turn and leave. Causing you to lose an exceptionally large commission.”
Babette pulled out the paper and a pen. No more small talk was spoken. Scarlett appreciated it.
The paper was signed, and the funds were electronically sent to the real estate company.
“Thank you” she said breathlessly.
Scarlett looked at her with disgust. Then held her hand out showing her the door.
“Yes, yes enjoy. Pleasure doing business with you.”
Bobette left as fast as she could.
Scarlett pulled out her cell phone to contact her employers. All three answered the call.
“The property is yours.” One voice asked.
“Yes” she replied.
“That is excellent Scarlett. Tonight, we will send the workers to start construction. Scarlett, you know what you must do.”
“Yes. Tonight, once the moon is full, I will send out the advertisement.”
“Make sure that you also put an advert in all the other avenues. We do not want any unwanted attention coming our way from the lack of being seen.”
“Understood.”
“We should be up and running next full moon.” The other owner stated.
The silence was not uncommon with the three. Scarlett was not fazed by it in the least.
“If that is all?’ She asked the three and in unison they replied “yes.” Then the connection was disconnected.
Scarlett looked at the area she stood in and could vision what it would become. A deep sigh escaped her lips. She had a lot to do and little time to do it in. She left the area but before she left, she seen that Babette had left the keys in the door.
She locked it, knowing that it would not keep out the young intruders tonight. Once the place was decided to be bought, she had hired an extra set of eyes to protect the investment. There were four teens that would sneak up to the penthouse and hang out. Tonight, will be the last night though she made sure of it.
With a turn of the lock and the press of the elevator button. the empty office will soon be known as Moonlight Medicine.
