Chapter 1The Silence Between Us
Daniella never believed in “life-changing moments.”
To her, life was simple—wake up, go to school, come home, repeat. Nothing dramatic. Nothing like the stories people told when they wanted life to sound more exciting than it really was.
But that belief started to crack on a cold Monday morning in Brooklyn.
Lincoln High School was already loud before the first bell. Hallways filled with footsteps, laughter, and voices that overlapped until everything became noise. Daniella moved through it with her headphones in, eyes forward, avoiding distractions.
That was how she liked it.
Controlled. Quiet. Safe.
Until someone bumped into her shoulder.
“Hey—watch it!”
Her books shifted in her arms, nearly slipping, but she caught them quickly. She looked up, ready to ignore whoever it was.
And stopped.
A guy stood in front of her, adjusting his backpack strap like nothing serious had happened. Dark hoodie, slightly messy hair, calm expression—but his eyes locked onto hers with unexpected focus.
“Sorry,” he said. “Didn’t see you there.”
Daniella should’ve just nodded and walked away.
But she didn’t.
“It’s fine,” she replied instead.
A pause followed—small, but noticeable. Like the hallway noise had faded just a little.
“I’m Alex,” he said.
She hesitated. “Daniella.”
He repeated her name quietly, like he was testing it in his mind. “Daniella… I’ll try not to run into you again.”
That made her laugh before she could stop it.
It was quick. Natural. Unexpected.
And Alex noticed.
By lunchtime, Daniella tried to convince herself it meant nothing.
Just a random interaction. A stranger at school. Nothing important.
But when she looked across the cafeteria, she saw him again.
Alex sat with friends, laughing like he didn’t have a care in the world. But every so often, his gaze shifted.
Straight to her.
Daniella noticed.
She always noticed things she pretended she didn’t.
“Stop,” she whispered to herself, looking away.
But the feeling didn’t go away.
After school, she stayed late in the library.
It was quiet there. Safe in a different way.
She tried to focus on her work.
Until a chair scraped across the floor.
She looked up.
Alex sat down across from her like it was the most normal thing in the world.
“I feel like I should explain this,” he said casually.
Daniella blinked. “Explain what?”
“Me being here,” he replied. “But honestly, I don’t have a good reason.”
She frowned slightly. “That’s… honest.”
He smirked. “I try.”
A pause.
Then Daniella asked, “So why are you really here?”
For a moment, Alex didn’t answer. The confidence he had in the hallway faded slightly, replaced by something quieter.
Then he said, “Because you were the only person today who didn’t try to get my attention.”
That made her still.
Daniella looked at him. “That doesn’t make sense.”
“Yeah,” he admitted softly. “I know.”
Silence settled between them.
Not empty.
Just heavy in a way neither of them understood yet.
Daniella looked down at her book, but she wasn’t reading anymore.
Alex wasn’t either.
And in that silence, something unspoken began.
Something neither of them was ready for.
Something that didn’t need words to exit
