Prologue
Paris is a good city to forget people in.
I know because I’ve been trying for years and the city has been very cooperative. The Seine doesn’t care. The grey mornings don’t care. The people on my street don’t know my name and I don’t know theirs. We have an agreement, we look through each other and everyone gets to keep their ghosts private.
It was working.
Then a Tuesday. The case file came.
And seven years of Paris came undone.
I don’t know how long I sat there. Long enough for my coffee to go cold. Long enough for the grey morning outside to become something else entirely, not Paris anymore, just light, just a window, just me on the wrong side of something I thought I had already finished.
I’ve recovered deleted files. Reconstructed entire histories from what people thought they had erased. I know better than anyone that some things don’t stay buried.
I just thought I was the exception
